For a long time, England’s chase seemed to be progressing steadily despite early jolts, but they eventually fell short by eight runs, ending at 317 all out with a ball to spare. Afghanistan’s pacer Azmatullah Omarzai (5/58) was the game-changer, striking at crucial junctures to dent England’s hopes.

England's innings got off to a shaky start with Phil Salt and Jamie Smith dismissed early, reducing them to 30 for 2. However, Joe Root (120 off 111 balls, 11 fours, 1 six) brought much-needed stability through two crucial partnerships. He added 68 runs with Ben Duckett (38) for the third wicket and then forged an 83-run stand with skipper Jos Buttler for the fifth wicket.

Although these partnerships weren’t explosive, they ensured that England remained within striking distance of the required run rate. However, the premature dismissals of Duckett and Buttler left Root with the burden of anchoring the chase alone.

Root played a smart, calculated knock, maintaining a strike rate close to 100 without taking unnecessary risks. He showcased his signature touches, including a reverse sweep four off Noor Ahmad and a scooped six behind the wicketkeeper off Fazalhaq Farooqi. His 17th ODI century came with a single off Rashid Khan, but just when England needed him to push further, he perished to a tired ramp shot off Omarzai, caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz behind the stumps.

With Root gone, England’s hopes rested on Jamie Overton (32 off 28 balls), who fought valiantly and stitched a 54-run stand for the seventh wicket. However, his dismissal to Omarzai all but sealed England’s fate.

The defeat marked the end of England’s campaign in the Champions Trophy, a disappointing finish for the 2019 ODI World Cup winners.
