Bangladesh's campaign in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 already ended when they faced their sixth defeat in the tournament. But the Asian side is still in contention for the Champions Trophy 2025, requiring to finish in top eight in the points table.
Bangladesh have dealt a significant blow to their aspirations as their captain, Shakib Al Hasan, has been ruled out of the tournament due to a left index finger injury.
The injury occurred during Bangladesh's match against Sri Lanka on November 6. Shakib continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers after being struck on the finger early in his innings. However, an emergency X-ray in Delhi following the game confirmed a fracture on the left PIP joint.
National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan provided further information, stating that Shakib's recovery is estimated to take three to four weeks. As a result, he will not be able to participate in Bangladesh's final match of the tournament against Australia on November 11.
“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers," ICC quoted Bayjedul as saying.
"He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.

Shakib found himself at the center of a controversial 'Time Out' dismissal incident during the match against Sri Lanka. When Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews faced an issue with his broken helmet strap, Bangladesh appealed for a 'time out.' Mathews engaged in a discussion with the umpires and Shakib, who decided not to withdraw the appeal, resulting in Mathews leaving the field.
Shakib described his decision as feeling like he was "at war" and stated, "One of our fielders came to me and said that if I appealed, he (Mathews) would be out. It's in the laws; I don't know if it's right or wrong."
Shakib's absence is a significant loss for the team, as he played a pivotal role in their victory over Sri Lanka, contributing with both bat and ball. Shakib scored a match-winning 82 runs from 65 balls and took 2/57 with the ball, earning him the Player of the Match award.
