Devajit Saikia, the former Assam cricketer, has been officially appointed as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He has replaced Jay Shah, who took over as the Chairman of ICC on December 1, 2024.

Saikia was elected as the secretary at the board's Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday. Meanwhile, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has also taken charge as the treasurer in the meeting.

Saikia and Prabhtej were the only two candidates nominated for the respective roles. Notably, Saikia was named the acting secretary of the BCCI after Jay Shah left the post to become the ICC chairman.

BCCI president Roger Binny had used his constitutional powers to appoint Saikia as the acting secretary.

Binny cited clause 7(1) (d) of the BCCI constitution to hand secretarial powers to Saika, who is a former first-class cricketer and also an Advocate General of the state. "The president shall in the event of vacancy or in disposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases.

"Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb," Binny wrote to Saikia.

Saikia's first assignment came early as he attended the meeting alongside BCCI president Roger Binny as the board discussed India's performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

As per reports, captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir attended the meeting.

Saikia's entry into cricket administration started way back in 2016 when he became one of the six vice presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) under the presidency of Hemanta Biswa Sarma, who is now the Chief Minister of Assam. He later became the ACA secretary in 2019.
