Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on the growing speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya’s IPL future, with several reports suggesting that the Mumbai Indians captain could be involved in a major trade before the next season.
Hardik’s future has been under the spotlight after Mumbai Indians failed to reach the playoffs in back-to-back seasons under his leadership. The disappointing results have led to rumours linking him with possible moves to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Why should Hardik join KKR or CSK?
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he does not expect Hardik to join any franchise other than CSK or KKR if he leaves Mumbai Indians. According to him, both teams are in need of a fresh start and could benefit from adding an experienced all-rounder like Hardik.

Ashwin also suggested what Mumbai Indians should demand if they consider a trade with Kolkata Knight Riders. He believes MI should only agree to the deal if they receive both fast bowler Harshit Rana and middle-order batter Rinku Singh in return.

“I don’t see Hardik moving to any team other than CSK or KKR. There are talks that CSK could offer Shivam Dube and a pacer, while KKR might include Cameron Green. But if I were Mumbai Indians, I would only accept a deal with KKR if Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh were part of the trade. That is the only way MI become a stronger team,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin also pointed out that Mumbai Indians would have to consider how much stronger their rivals could become after signing Hardik.
“If CSK sign Hardik by giving away Dube and an Indian pacer, they become a better team but not unbeatable. However, if KKR get Hardik, their batting line-up becomes extremely dangerous. Mumbai Indians will have to think carefully before making a decision because they wouldn’t want one of their biggest rivals to gain a major advantage,” he added.
Hardik yet to play cricket after IPL 2026
Hardik has not played competitive cricket since IPL 2026 ended. He had a difficult season with Mumbai Indians, scoring 206 runs and taking only four wickets in 10 matches as the five-time champions finished ninth in the points table.
