England vs India 2nd Test: Shubman Gill smashed his maiden Test double century during the second match against England at Edgbaston on Thursday. He is only the third Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to achieve the feat on English soil.
The 25-year-old is the first Indian captain to score a double century in England in Tests. Gill entered his name in the history books as he became only the sixth Indian captain to score a double ton in Test cricket, joining the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni in the elite list.
Indian captains to score double centuries in Tests
M.A.K Pataudi: vs England
Sunil Gavaskar: vs West Indies
Sachin Tendulkar: vs New Zealand
MS Dhoni: vs Australia
Virat Kohli: vs South Africa
Shubman Gill: vs England
The right-handed batter is now the only cricketer in the world to have double centuries in Tests and ODIs and a century in T20Is to his name. Gill took a single off Josh Tongue in the 122nd over of India's first innings to reach to a double century.
Gill has been in impressive form with the bat ever since he got India's Test captaincy following to retirements of veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin from the format. He kicked off the five-match series against England with a magnificent century in the first Test at Leeds. He played a 147-run knock in the first innings, but India lost that match to go 0-1 down in the series.
The Indian skipper mentioned his disappointment at not converting his knock into a big one in Leeds and led from the front once again at Edgbaston.
Gill has broken a plethora of records on the way. He is the first Asian captain to have scored a double century in a Test match in England. Gill has also set a new record for the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test innings in England, going past the 179 scored by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1990.
Arriving at the crease when India were 95/2, Gill showed an outstanding discipline and commitment to take India to a strong position. He first stitched a 66-run stand for the third wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal (87). While India lost a couple of quick wickets earlier in the final session of the first day, Gill recovered things for the visitors with another promising partnership with Ravindra Jadeja.
They resumed India's innings on the second day and ended up putting a 203-run stand for the sixth wicket before Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 89 runs just before the lunch break.
