ENG vs SL: England's star Test batter Joe Root has achieved a new milestone by smashing his 34th Test hundred against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Root had scored 143 runs during the first innings, leveled, and then went past the earlier England record held by Alastair Cook of scoring 33 hundred in his 145th Test match to that of Cook's 161 matches.
Root scored this hundred on Day 3 in Lahiru Kumara's over and this was also his seventh Test century at the iconic venue of Lord's and thus broke the record he shared with Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan for scoring the most hundreds at this venue. With this hundred, Root has also joined an elite group of players who have scored hundreds during both innings of a Test match at Lord's, which has batters like George Hedley, Gooch, and Vaughan.
Although his performance at Lord's was brilliant, Gooch currently is the record holder for scoring the most runs in a single Test match at Lord's as he scored 456 runs against India in 1990. Root's latest milestone also let him share the joint-sixth place in the list of all-time hundred scorers, which has batters like Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 51 hundreds after playing in 200 Test matches.

Root was the last batter to be dismissed for the Ollie Pope-led side, who posted a target of 251 runs took their lead to 482 runs, and gave a mammoth target to chase.
