The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially appointed Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of England’s Test team. At the same time, Joe Root has returned as the team’s Test captain, marking the beginning of a new era for English cricket.
Fleming arrives with an outstanding reputation after enjoying a hugely successful coaching career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He also captained New Zealand during his playing days and remains one of the country’s most successful Test leaders.
Fleming brings years of leadership experience
The former New Zealand captain played 111 Tests and led his country in 80 of them, winning 28 matches. He also enjoyed a successful county career in England, representing Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. One of the highlights of his domestic career came in 2005 when he captained Nottinghamshire to their first County Championship title in many years.
As a coach, Fleming has built one of the strongest resumes in world cricket. During his 18-year spell with Chennai Super Kings, he guided the franchise to five IPL titles and 10 finals. He has also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred and worked with CSK’s teams in South Africa and the United States, along with a stint at Melbourne Stars.
Joe Root begins second spell as England Test captain
Joe Root is no stranger to the captaincy. He previously led England in 65 Test matches, more than any other player in the country’s history, and registered 27 victories during his first spell between 2017 and 2022.
He briefly returned as stand-in captain during the Test against New Zealand earlier this summer, and the ECB has now handed him the role on a full-time basis once again.
Fleming to take charge after Pakistan series begins
Although Fleming has accepted the role, he will officially begin his duties after the start of the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach for the opening phase.
The delayed start allows Fleming to spend time with his family in New Zealand after ending his long association with Chennai Super Kings earlier this month. He is expected to travel to England later this summer before the team’s tour of South Africa.
