India vs England 1st Test: India's star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant broke a plethora of records with his twin-century at Headingley, joining a list of legends by becoming the visiting batter with most Test sixes in England.
Showcasing his aggressive batting style, Pant scored 134 runs from 178 balls for India in the first innings of the ongoing first Test against England followed it up with 118 off 140 balls (15 fours and 3 sixes).
In his combined innings, Pant slammed a total of nine sixes, equaling the record of hitting the most sixes in a Test match played in England.
Before the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Andrew Flintoff (vs Australia in Edgbaston in 2005) and Ben Stokes (vs Australia at Lord’s in 2023) scored nine sixes in a traditional format match in England.
Pant was at his scintillating best, after being subdued for a crucial period, to smash 118, his eighth century in the format, aided by 15 boundaries and three sixes.
The 27-year-old also smashed many records, becoming the first wicketkeeper and fifth batter from India to score two hundreds in the same Test match in overseas conditions.
Pant is now just the second wicketkeeper-batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test after Andy Flower did so in 2001. Interestingly, instead of his trademark handspring celebration, he brought out the one that British footballer Dele Alli has made popular.
He is now the seventh Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test. He has made a magnificent 134 in the first innings. Pant is also the seventh Indian batter to score hundreds in both Test innings.
Before him, Sunil Gavaskar achieved this feat thrice, Rahul Dravid twice, and Vijay Hazare, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane have done this once in their career.
