England vs India 4th Test: Shubman Gill will be looking to continue with his impressive batting form when India takes the field for the fourth Test against England in Manchester, which begins on July 23.
The ongoing five-match Test series is Gill's first assignment as India's new Test skipper, and he left no stone unturned in justifying the selection committee's decision to appoint him the captain following the retirements of veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Gill is the leading run-getter in the series after the first three matches, having scored 607 runs at an average of 101.17. He already has smashed three centuries in the series and will be looking to produce another masterclass performance in order to help India bounce back. India are 1-2 down in the five-match series, having suffered a heartbreaking defeat by just 22 runs in the third Test at Lord's.
As India gear up for action in Manchester, Gill will be eyeing a 19-year-old record. He needs just 25 runs to smash the all-time record for the most number of runs scored by an Asian batter in a Test series in England. Currently, the impressive record is held by former Pakistan batter Mohammed Yousuf, who scored 631 runs in four matches at an average of 90.14, including the highest score of 202, during Pakistan's 2006 tour of England.
Most runs in a Test series in England (Asian batters)
Mohammad Yousuf (Pakistan) - 631 runs from 4 matches, 2006
Shubman Gill (India) - 607 runs from 3 matches, 2025
Rahul Dravid (India) - 602 runs from 4 matches, 2002
Virat Kohli (India) - 593 runs from 5 matches, 2018
Sunil Gavaskar (India) - 542 runs from 4 matches, 1979
Saleem Malik (Pakistan) - 488 runs from 5 matches, 1992
India have had a disappointing record in Manchester when it comes to Test cricket. India are yet to register a Test win at the famous venue, having lost four out of 9 matches played, whereas five games ended in draws.
