Stuart Broad played a vital part in England's Test side for a very long period of time and left an impressive mark in world cricket. Playing his last Test in the ongoing Ashes series, former England captain Alastair Cook said he will miss Broad playing for the country.
The veteran pacer had announced the ongoing fifth Test against Australia will be his last game in international cricket, ending his 17-year-long career.
With over 600 Test wickets, Broad will bid adieu the Test cricket as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in red-ball cricket and second among pacers, only behind his longtime teammate James Anderson.
“Very few of us are privileged enough to choose how we bow out. He deserves that. As I watched him announce his retirement on Sky Sports, I felt quite emotional. I will genuinely miss watching him play," Cook wrote in his column on Sunday Times.
Cook recalled the time when his team including Broad and Anderson claimed the No.1 Test rankings for England and they promised to have a drink together after retiring from the game.
“Only Jimmy [James Anderson] is left now from the team who got to No. 1 in the Test rankings and are the only England side to have won the Ashes in Australia since 1986-87. I remember him telling me how much he was looking forward to us all having a glass of red together when we were all retired. Broady, I’ll have the bottle ready but first, there’s a job to be finished in south London,” he added.
Broad will have his final say in Test cricket when England look to hold Australia from winning the match at The Oval in London on the final day.
Australia need 249 runs to win the match with 10 wickets in hand as only 38 overs were bowled on the rain-hit Day 4. Broad bowled six overs in Australia's second innings including two maidens. He along with other pacers will aim to draw the series 2-2.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja remained unbeaten after scoring half-centuries as Australia chase 384 in the second innings to win the match and lift the Ashes.
