Asia Cup 2025: For the cricket fans all across the world, the highly-awaited Asia Cup will begin from 9th September. Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue will lock horns with Oman, UAE, and arch-nemesis Pakistan during the continental tournament.
As far as the Indian team is concerned, the BCCI hasn't revealed the team yet. The team will be announced next week, and before that, let's take a look at three Indian players who might be selected in the squad for this event.
1. Mohammed Siraj
Criterion | Data |
Innings | 16 |
Wickets | 14 |
Average | 32.29 |
Strike Rate | 24.86 |
Overall T20I performance: His inability to take wickets in the shortest format has forced the team selectors to ignore him from the T20I team. Till now, the pacer has taken just 14 wickets after playing in 16 T20I matches. He has taken just three wickets during his last eight T20I matches, and that's why he was dropped from India's T20I team.
Bumrah is available, Siraj needs rest: Although Siraj's fellow teammate Arshdeep Singh is all set to be a part of India's Asia Cup team, as he has taken 99 wickets after playing in 66 T20Is matches, whereas Jasprit Bumrah has told the selectors that he is available for the tournament. And since Siraj had bowled tirelessly during the recently concluded Test series against England, the selectors would want him to get the much-needed rest for the home Test season.
2. Rishabh Pant
Injury Setback in England: India's star wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant had picked up a foot injury during the fourth Test match in Manchester in Chris Woakes' over. Due to this injury, he was ruled out for the remainder of the Test series, and he is still in rehab, and there are high chances that he won't be picked in the Asia Cup squad.
Poor T20I Record: The team management backed him for a long time, but he couldn't prove his worth in this format. He has scored just 1209 runs at a poor average of 23.2 and a strike rate of 127.3. Due to his inconsistent performance in this format, the team management replaced him with Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma.
3. KL Rahul
Criterion | Data |
Innings | 13 |
Runs | 539 |
Average | 53.9 |
Strike Rate | 149.72 |
No vacancy in existing top order: He might have performed brilliantly during IPL 2025, but KL Rahul might not get selected for the Asia Cup squad as the Men in Blue already boast of a formidable top order. Since Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are the current openers in T20Is, and with Tilak Varma batting at the No.3 position, where he has scored 443 runs at a brilliant average of 55.38 and a strike rate of 169.73.
Talks of Jaiswal, Gill's comeback: The other reason for Rahul not making it to India's Asia Cup squad could be Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill making a comeback to the T20I team. Speculations are rife that the team management might be planning to call back Gill and Jaiswal, even though they haven't played in this format, owing to the hectic Test schedule. If these two do return, then the management won't select Rahul, who is also a brilliant batter in the shortest format. And if they do pick him, then there won't be any space left for middle-order batters and finishers in the team
