Former India cricketer and chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has advised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against appointing Hemang Badani as their new head coach for IPL 2027.

CSK are looking for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down following a difficult run for the five-time champions. The team has failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last three seasons.

According to a report in The Indian Express, former CSK captain MS Dhoni has suggested that the franchise should have an Indian-led support staff. Badani has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the head coach role under that plan.

Badani has experience in the IPL and has also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred and Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. He was previously associated with Delhi Capitals (DC) and has also worked in several overseas leagues.

Srikkanth suggested CSK appoint Chandrakant Pandit as new head coach

Dhoni has reportedly suggested that the new head coach should work exclusively with CSK. However, Srikkanth does not believe Badani is the right choice for the job.

“If Dhoni is preferring an Indian coach, then I would go for Chandrakant Pandit. He’s a good guy and has won trophies. But CSK should go for an Indian option. Either the coach must have been a great international player or achieved big as a coach at the domestic or IPL level,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

“There is no way Hemang Badani should be CSK’s head coach. He didn’t do anything in DC. I don’t know why CSK should go all-out for him. He is nothing special as a coach. When you have Dhoni, why do you even need someone else as coach? Dhoni himself is enough as head coach.”

Srikkanth also feels CSK should not rush into making a decision. With the IPL 2027 auction still a few months away, he believes the franchise has enough time to assess all the options before finalising Fleming’s replacement.

“It’s fine that CSK are taking their time. There is no necessity to make the decision in a hurry. The auction will only be in December, so there’s enough time. So they shouldn’t rush it at all and should think calmly to make the right decision,” said Srikkanth.
