ICC Announces Qualification Process For LA28 Olympics Cricket, India Women Among First Teams To Qualify

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the qualification process for cricket's return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028. The roadmap also introduces the first-ever ICC Olympics Qualifier, which will decide the final spots in both the men's and women's tournaments.

How Many Teams will feature in LA28 Olympics?

Cricket will feature six teams each in the men's and women's T20 competitions at LA28. The qualification system ensures representation from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in both events.

Five of the six places in each tournament will be decided through existing ICC competitions and the ICC T20I rankings, in line with the current Future Tours Programme (FTP). The remaining place in both the men's and women's events will be filled through the ICC Olympics Qualifier, scheduled to be held in 2027.

Who all are confirmed for LA28 Olympics?

The ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 has already confirmed the first four women's teams for the Olympics. Australia, Great Britain (through England), India and South Africa secured qualification after finishing as the highest-ranked eligible teams from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa respectively. Only one team from each continent could qualify through this route.

Why West Indies need a diffrent route to compete in LA28 Olympics?

The West Indies, despite being a Full Member of the ICC, cannot compete as a single team at the Olympics because it represents multiple Caribbean nations rather than one IOC-recognised National Olympic Committee. If the West Indies men's or women's team finishes among the top eight eligible sides in the ICC T20I rankings by 31 December 2026, a separate Caribbean qualifying tournament will be held to decide which nation will represent the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Why USA directly qualified?

Hosts USA can earn direct qualification in both the men's and women's competitions, but only if they feature in the top 15 of the respective ICC T20I rankings at any point between 30 June and 31 December 2026.

If the USA women's team fails to meet that requirement, the automatic qualification place will go to the highest-ranked team not yet qualified, regardless of continent, based on the ICC T20I rankings on 1 March 2027. The same rule will apply in the men's competition if the USA men's team does not achieve the required ranking by the end of 2026.

Why India qualified for LA28 Olympics?

For the men's event, the remaining automatic qualification spots will go to the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC Men's T20I rankings as of 31 December 2026.

The final place in both the men's and women's Olympic tournaments will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. The tournament will feature eight teams in each competition, with the other seven participants selected based on the ICC T20I rankings after excluding teams that have already secured Olympic qualification.

The ICC said details regarding the dates and host country for the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027 will be announced at a later stage.
