India vs Australia 5th Test: Just when things looked balanced for India after a disappointing start to the first session, they lost Shubman Gill on the final before lunch in the fifth and final Test against Australia on Friday.
India ended the morning session of the first day on 57/3 in 25 overs. Gill looked good for his 20 runs but was dismissed just before lunch by Nathan Lyon. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 12 runs off 48 balls.
The young batter tried to waste a bit of time in order to not give the hosts any chance for another over just before lunch. A lapse in concentration for Gill and an unnecessary move to step down the wicket allowed Australia yet another opening.
Despite picking up two early wickets after India opted to bat first, the Aussie bowlers had to work hard and looked a bit inconsistent with line and length. They gave away 11 extra runs in the first session.
Gill and Virat Kohli bailed the team out of trouble with a promising partnership of 40 runs for the third wicket. The right-handed batter returned to the Indian side after missing the Melbourne Test. He replaced the out-of-form skipper Rohit Sharma in the playing XI.
India had a disappointing start to the innings as KL Rahul departed cheaply after returning to the opening spot. He was dismissed by Mitchell Starc in the fifth over of the match for just 4 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal too couldn't capitalise and was dismissed for 10 runs by Scott Boland.
Debutant Beau Webster had his first act with a regulation catch in the slip cordon.
Kohli was again welcomed with boos and Australians were convinced that he was gone when Boland again pitched one on the 8-metre length.
With his bat face slightly pointed towards mid-off, Kohli jabbed at it and a diving Smith was absolutely confident that he had lobbed the ball before it touched the grass.
The replays pointed out that the ball touched the ground and the Indian talisman survived.
Kohli gathered himself and then left well although he did go for a cover drive to a fifth stump delivery from Starc and an off-drive off Cummins both of which could have been boundaries had the outfield not been on the slightly heavier side.
