World Cup 2023: India will have to wait more for their next ICC trophy as they once again fell short with a loss in the World Cup final making the wait even more frustrating.

India lost against Australia by six wickets in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.

Despite playing some remarkable cricket and putting up dominant performances throughout the tournament The Men in Blue missed out on their third World Cup title as the long and frustrating wait for an ICC trophy continues.

The Indian cricket team has faced a persistent drought for a major ICC trophy even though they have played promising cricket in the tournaments over the past few years.

Notably, India were the only undefeated side in the tournament and have won all of their 10 matches including the semi-final which they won against New Zealand.

The stage was set in front of the home crowd, the team was good and the performances were spectacular as Rohit Sharma-led Indian team aimed to create history in the fourth World Cup final.

However, the Aussies had other plans as they outclassed the hosts in the final in front of a jam-packed crowd in Ahmedabad to claim the record-sixth World Cup title.

India last won an ICC trophy in 2013 when MS Dhoni led the side to the Champions Trophy win in England.

Since then, the Men in Blue have been part of semi-finals and finals on multiple occasions but have been falling short of lifting the trophy.

After 10 years of wait, it looked like Rohit Sharma had enough tools to make it count at home as they gave rise to the hopes to break the deadlock this time with the title win.

After the Champions Trophy win in 2013, the Indian team fell short of a trophy when they missed out on the T20 World Cup win in 2014, losing the final against Sri Lanka.

What followed was a series of heartbreaks and disappointments as they lost the semi-final matches against Australia and West Indies in the 2015 World Cup and 2016 T20 World Cup.

It looked like the Men in Blue would emerge out as title winners in the Champions Trophy but missed out on that as well after losing the final against arch-rivals Pakistan.

India had a strong squad in the 2019 World Cup as they put up promising performances, winning all of their matches before they were defeated by New Zealand in the semi-final.

In the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship, the Blackcaps once again got the better of India by beating them in the final in 2021.

The T20 World Cup in the same year proved to be a horrible one for the Indian team as they were knocked out in the group stage after being defeated by Pakistan and New Zealand.

The disappointing run continued in 2022 when India lost yet another semi-final, this time against England in the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

The year 2023 brought so many expectations with India first making it to the final of the World Test Championship which they lost against Australia.

In their second attempt for an ICC trophy in the same year, India were outclassed by the Aussies again to keep them waiting for their next silverware.
