India vs Australia Final, World Cup 2023: Travis Head put up a batting masterclass against India in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.
Australia defeated India by six wickets in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 to clinch their record-sixth title with Head smashing a marvelous century.
Head, who played a match-winning knock of 137 runs in just 120 balls, called Indian skipper Rohit Sharma the unlucky man after his World Cup dream went unfulfilled after the third and probably the last attempt.
The Aussie star also called his spectacular catch as the turning point that saw Rohit heading back to the pavilion.
"That's the turning point of the match for me," Head said at the post-match presentation.
Rohit was playing brilliantly after India were put into bat first as he scored 47 runs in just 31 balls, providing the team a fiery start with the help of four boundaries and three sixes despite the early wicket of Shubman Gill.
Head took an impressive catch while running backwards to dismiss Rohit who already had the upper hand over Glenn Maxwell in the 10th over but opted to hit another lofted shot but managed to find Head after miscuing it.
"He’s (Rohit Sharma) probably the unluckiest man in the world," Head said about the Indian captain, who managed to hold on to his tears after Maxwell hit the winning runs.
"Again, it's (fielding) something that I worked hard on. I couldn't imagine getting a hundred, couldn't probably imagine holding onto that one. Was great to hold on to that catch," Head said about that catch.
While chasing the target of 242 runs, Australia had a horrible start to their innings as they lost three early wickets before Travis Head was joined by Marnus Labuschagne in the middle.
The duo added 192 runs for the fourth wicket making it a heavy struggle for the Indian bowlers and helping their team clinch the victory in 43 overs.
While Head scored a match-winning century, Labuschagne also scored his half-century and remained unbeaten on 58 runs in 110 balls.
"Never expected this, not in a million years, truly an exceptional day. Lot better than sitting on the couch at home. Really glad to contribute, the first twenty balls I played gave me a lot of confidence and yea I was able to carry through. The way Mitch Marsh came out and took the game on, he set the tone. That was the energy we wanted and we knew the wicket may get tough. It was a great decision to bowl first after winning the toss. I felt the wicket got better as the day went on. It took a little bit of spin, it paid dividends. Nice to be a part of it, nice to play a role in all of that."
Head wasn't expected to make it to the World Cup team after he suffered a hand injury a few weeks before the start of the tournament but was kept in the squad.
Despite missing a few matches, Head became crucial for the Aussies at the top order with his attacking approach and aggressive stroke play as he played one of his best ODI innings at the biggest stage of them all
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, once again fell short of putting his hands on that World Cup trophy, but this time in defeat as captain.
He was very unfortunate for not being part of the World Cup-winning Indian side in 2011 but missed out on the title victory after India were knocked out in the semi-finals in 2015 and 2019 editions.
