Team India trails the series 0-1, having failed to defend the 371 runs set by them at Leeds despite scoring five centuries in the Test, including two by their swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. The test gives flashbacks to the time when India failed to defend 378 against England in the year 2022.
Ahead of the 2nd test at Edgbaston, a look at how India did not just fail to secure the match but also missed out on a golden opportunity to clinch a test series win since 2007.
The fifth and final Test during India's previous tour of England, a match originally slated for September 2021 in Manchester got postponed due to COVID-19. The England Cricket Board subsequently rescheduled this decisive Test to be played in Birmingham between July 1 and 5, 2022. With India holding a 2-1 series lead, English captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl first.
England's pacers made a strong start, reducing India to 98/5 on the opening day. However, Rishabh Pant launched a remarkable counter-attack, scoring a phenomenal 146 runs off just 111 balls. He was brilliantly supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who notched a magnificent century (104), as the duo forged a crucial 222-run sixth-wicket partnership, guiding India to a strong first-innings total of 416. For England, James Anderson was the standout bowler, claiming a five-wicket haul.
In response, India's fast-bowling trio of Mohammed Siraj (4/66), Jasprit Bumrah (3/68), and Mohammed Shami (2/78) effectively restricted England to 284 in their first innings, securing a significant 132-run lead. In their second innings, half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara (66) and Rishabh Pant (57) helped India reach 245 before being bowled out. English skipper Ben Stokes led his side with the ball, scalping four wickets.
Set a challenging target of 378 for victory, England's chase began powerfully with Alex Lees (56) and Zak Crawley (46) putting on a dominant 107-run opening stand. Although India managed to stage a comeback, reducing the opposition to 109/3, Joe Root (142)* and Jonny Bairstow (114)* then completely turned the tide. The formidable pair smashed aggressive centuries and forged a marathon unbroken partnership of 269 runs off 316 balls, guiding England to a commanding seven-wicket victory. This remarkable chase stood as the eighth-highest successful run-chase in Test history.
Team India's Record At Edgbaston
