England captain Jos Buttler is on the verge of achieving a unique milestone when his side takes on India in the first T20I of the five-match series on July 1. The wicketkeeper-batter is just 31 runs away from completing 700 T20I runs against India. If he reaches the mark, Buttler will become the first player in T20I history to score 700 or more runs against two different teams.
He has already scored 701 runs against the West Indies and now needs only 31 more against India to add another record to his name. Buttler Already Leads the Run Charts Against India
The superstar wicketkeeper batter has enjoyed plenty of success against India in T20Is over the years. In 25 innings against India, he has scored 669 runs at an average of 31.85 and a strike rate of 143.87. His record includes five half-centuries. He is also the highest run-scorer in India-England T20I history with 669 runs, 21 more than former India captain Virat Kohli, who has 648.

Another Major Record Could Also Be Within Reach
As the five-match series progresses, Buttler could also challenge another T20I record. Pakistan’s Babar Azam currently holds the record for the most runs against a single opposition in T20Is. He has scored 880 runs against New Zealand in 24 innings. Virat Kohli is second on that list with 794 runs against Australia.
If Buttler continues his strong record against India, he could move closer to that milestone as well.
Among the Highest Run-Scorers in T20Is
Buttler is currently the fourth-highest run-scorer in T20I cricket.
Babar Azam tops the list with 4,596 runs, followed by Rohit Sharma (4,231) and Virat Kohli (4,188). Buttler has scored 4,037 runs in 155 T20Is, including one century and 28 fifties.
Form Has Been a Concern for Buttler
Despite his impressive career numbers, Buttler has struggled in T20 internationals in recent months.
He had a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 in India and has not scored a T20I half-century in his last 15 innings. His most recent fifty came against South Africa in September 2025, when he made 83.
However, Buttler looked in good touch during the 2026 IPL season. Playing for Gujarat Titans, he scored 526 runs in 17 innings at an average of 37.57, including four fifties.
Abhishek Sharma Closing In on Top Five
India opener Abhishek Sharma also has a chance to reach a milestone in the series.
The left-hander has scored 288 runs in just six T20I innings against England at a remarkable strike rate of 214.92. His tally includes one century and one fifty.
He needs another 73 runs to break into the top five highest run-scorers in India-England T20I history. At present, the list is led by Jos Buttler, followed by Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav.
India will enter into the series after suffering a disappointing series defeat against Ireland. England, meanwhile, will be playing their first T20I since losing to India in the semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
