IND vs ENG: Former India cricketer and Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly has also joined the bandwagon of questioning Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the Indian Test team for the upcoming series against England.

Iyer has been in his prime form over the past year, guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph in 2024 and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in 2025.

However, despite his good form, Iyer was not included in the red-ball squad and this led to many fans and former greats of the game questioning the omission.

Ganguly also questioned Iyer’s absence, noting the right-handed batter's terrific performances over the past year. He also stated that Iyer has also worked on his short ball drawback.

“He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He is the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do," Ganguly told RevSportz.

Iyer last featured in Test back in 2024; however, he was dropped from the squad midway through the series against England. Meanwhile, he was in fine form in the domestic circuit as he slammed 480 runs from seven innings for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 with two hundreds to his name.

Meanwhile, the former India captain also supported India to perform well in the England series, stating that ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s form will play a critical role in the team’s triumph.

“Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win,” he added.
