India vs England, T20 World Cup 2024: India defeated England by 68 runs in the second semi-final match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, June 27.
India have made it to the final and will be taking on South Africa, aiming for their second T20 WC title.
The Men in Blue completely outclassed the defending champions in all departments and took revenge for the semi-final defeat that they suffered in the tournament's previous edition in 2022.
The Rohit Sharma-led side maintained their winning streak in the tournament and will now be looking to go all the way and lift the trophy being unbeaten.
Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel put up a show with the ball as India bowled England out for just 103 runs in 16.4 overs, taking three wickets each in their respective four overs.
Biggest win-margins in T20 WC knockouts (by runs)
74 runs - WI vs AUS, Colombo RPS, 2012 SF
68 runs - IND vs ENG, Providence, 2024 SF*
57 runs - SL vs WI, The Oval, 2009 SF
36 runs - WI vs SL, Colombo RPS, 2012 final
Jasprit Bumrah provided great support and ended up with two wickets as well.
Chasing a challenging target of 172 runs, England lost three wickets inside the powerplay and never recovered from that. Skipper Jos Buttler scored 23 runs whereas Phil Salt (5) and Jonny Bairstow (0) departed cheaply.
Harry Brook looked dangerous in the middle for a bit and stitched a 19-run stand for the sixth wicket with Liam Livingstone. He top-scored for the defending champions with 25 runs before departing in the 11th over.
After Livingstone's horrible run-out for 11 runs in the 15th over, it remained a formality before India wrapped it up with the dismissal of Jofra Archer who scored 21 runs in 15 balls.
Earlier, India posted a total of 171/7 in their 20 overs after being put into bat first on the back of Rohit Sharma's 57 runs in 39 balls whereas Suryakumar Yadav scored 47 off 36 deliveries.
Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers for England, having taken three wickets for 37 runs in his three overs.
"I have bowled in the powerplay in the past, so I had to bowl in the powerplay, that was the plan. The wicket was stopping and keeping low, so I tried to bowl in the right areas. The wicket was slow, so I tried to bowl slower in this match, and it worked for me. It wouldn't have worked had I bowled quicker, would have been easier for their batters. Our batters told us that the wicket wasn't easy, so 160 was a good total according to us," Axar Patel said after being adjudged as the Player of the Match.
India and South Africa will face off in the title clash scheduled to be played at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados on Saturday, June 29.
