IND vs ENG 4th Test: India's star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen attending a training session at the Beckenham County Ground, where he faced bowling coach Morne Morkel. For the next half an hour, Jaiswal batted against Morkel brilliantly.
This was seen as a strategy to face Jofra Archer during the match as the latter took his wicket during both innings of the third Test match at Lord's, where Jaiswal scored 13 and 0 runs.
Ryan Ten Doeschate, who is the assistant coach of the Shubman Gill-led side, reckoned that this wasn't the case as Morkel bowled during the training session since both the pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep gave it a miss.
After a few balls, Morkel was seen walking towards Jaiswal and having a conversation about a few things. And then, when Morkel began paying attention to other bowlers, Jaiswal continued to bat against local net bowlers.
Jaiswal had a flying start to the ongoing Test series as he scored a hundred in Headingley and then scored a match-winning knock of 87 runs at Edgbaston. But things didn't go in his favour at Lord's and he was thus seen struggling.
Besides registering low scores, he was criticised for his shot selection during the second innings. When the team needed him the most, he failed to deliver. He tried to play a pull shot in Archer's over but got dismissed as Jamie Smith took his catch. His aggression might have looked like Jasiwal's desperation, which was beaten by Chris Woakes a few overs ago.
The fans on social media slammed him, as ex-England pacer Stuart Broad also didn't hold back. “Jaiswal getting out, (it was a really bad shot. I’m surprised he just didn’t look to cut it over the offside. He is the player who moves the scoreboard forward. In a low chase, when you are defending, if you come to bowl and you’ve got a Sehwag, Warner, the opening batters that can take the game away from you and they up 60 for none or one off ten, the game is sort of done,” Broad was qouted as saying on For the love of Cricket podcast.
It wasn't the first time Jaiswal was dismissed after playing a poor shot. In Birmingham, England, skipper Ben Stokes tried to force him to smash the ball towards the outside of the off-stump, and he was thus caught behind. During the second innings, Josh Tongue dismissed him by lbw as he tried to play a cover drive.
This emphasises that of the 233 runs that he had scored till now, he has scored 77 of those with the help of drives, 51 by playing cuts, and he has left 49 balls during six innings. He was dismissed twice as he tried to bat defensively on his back foot.
Since the pitch at Old Trafford would be slightly easier to bat on, it would be interesting to see how Jaiswal will try to protect his wicket and will aim to bat consistently.
