IND vs IRE, T20 World Cup 2024: Axar Patel completed 50 wickets in T20I format during India's T20I World Cup 2024 match against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday, June 5.

Axar bowled just one over and ended up taking a wicket for just three runs, dismissing Barry McCarthy for 0 in the 12th over.

The star all-rounder took a stunning catch to achieve the feat as he became India's ninth bowler and fifth spinner to touch the 50-wicket mark in the shortest format.

He reached the milestone in his 53rd T20I match and has an average of 23.78 to his name.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker for India in the T20Is, having taken 96 wickets in 80 matches.

India put up a remarkable bowling effort in their first match of the marquee tournament against Ireland, bowling them out for just 96 runs in 16 overs.

Hardik Pandya was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets for just 27 runs in his four overs whereas Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah ended up with two scalps each.

"That was an outstanding effort by Axar, those are the catches when you let your hand-eye coordination let in,' Hardik praised Axar's catch during the innings break.

This was India's third-best effort in terms of seamers taking the most wickets in a T20 World Cup match, taking eight out of 10 wickets.

India came up with surprises when it came to the team combinations as they kept Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson out from the playing XI.

Virat Kohli came out to open the Indian innings with skipper Rohit Sharma but was dismissed for just one run in the run chase.

India included four all-rounders in Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel in the team and none of Yuzvendra or Kuldeep Yadav got to play.

India are placed in Group A alongside Ireland, Canada, the USA and arch-rivals Pakistan.
