India vs South Africa 1st Test: India's dream of winning a Test series on South African soil got shattered as they suffered a heavy defeat by innings and runs in the first Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday, December 28.
Marco Jansen picked up the final wicket as Virat Kohli was undone by a stunning catch from Kagiso Rabada to wrap up the game with the visitors getting bowled out for 131 in their second innings.
It took just three days for the hosts South Africa to get the better of the Rohit Sharma-led side and go 1-0 up in the two-match series.
Nandre Burger was instrumental on his Test debut as he picked up wickets for runs to help his team bowl India out for just in their second innings.
Kohli put up a lone fight but was short of partners as he seemed to have batted on a different surface altogether. He was the only Indian batter to go past 50 in the second innings whereas no other batter apart from Kohli and Shubman Gill couldn't even touch the double figures.
Earlier in the third day, Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen put up a show to take South Africa to a massive first-inning total of 408 runs despite being one batter short as skipper Temba Bavuma wasn't fit to bat due to injury.
While Elgar played an incredible innings of 185 runs to kick off his farewell series in style, Jansen provided remarkable support as he scored 84 runs with crucial run contributions from tail-enders.
Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for the touring side as he picked up four wickets for 69 runs with Mohammed Siraj getting two wickets as well.
After being put into bat first, India managed to reach 245 runs despite a horrible outing with the bat as KL Rahul stood tall in his comeback Test to keep things alive for his team.
He smashed a magnificent century, scoring 101 runs on the day with the tough batting conditions due to overcast weather in Centurion.
Notably, India have never won a Test series in South Africa, a feat that will still remain unbreached at the end of this series as it is a two-match series.
While India will look to level the series as best of their efforts in the second match, the hosts will aim for a complete whitewash.
The second Test match of the series will be played at the Newlands in Cape Town and will commence from Wednesday, January 3.
