India vs South Africa: Indian captain Rohit Sharma ended up on the winning side in the second Test against South Africa at the Newlands in Cape Town on Thursday, January 4.

India thrashed the hosts well inside two days to register a dominant victory by seven wickets and level the two-match series 1-1.

With the win, Rohit created history on personal terms as well as he became only the second Indian captain in the history of the format to draw a Test series on South African soil.

He stands behind MS Dhoni who was the captain of the side in 2010-11 when India managed to draw the three-match series 1-1.

That was the first and last time when India ended up with such a result in a series in the longest format in South Africa.

Rohit was at the crease on the second day of the match when Shreyas Iyer hit the winning runs to chase down the 79-run target.

Notably, this was the first series as well for Rohit Sharma as captain in South Africa after being handed over the leadership role of the side across formats.

After getting thrashed in the first Test inside three days at Centurion, the visitors came out all guns blazing and bowled the hosts out for just 55 runs in the first innings.

The surface seemed to be a difficult one to bat as India also were bowled out for 153 runs but managed to take the first-inning lead.

South Africa's second innings also saw wickets falling quickly before Aiden Markram put up a brilliant fight and smashed a century.

The hosts were bowled out for 176 runs to set a short target for India which they chased down in 12 overs.

Despite being a strong Test side India had the results to disappoint in the longest format in South Africa.

India lost the three-match series 1-2 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli in the 2017-18 tour. The only win of the series ended India's streak of losing five Tests in a row against SENA teams away from home.

The 2021-22 series also saw a 2-1 result in South Africa's favor under the captaincy of Kohli and KL Rahul.

The recently concluded series also witnessed India's dream shattered for winning their maiden Test series on South African soil.
