Ind vs WI 1st ODI Highlights: India Defeat West Indies By 5 Wickets To Take 1-0 Lead In Series

The pair of Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja completes the chase as India beat West Indies by 5 wickets with 27.1 overs to spare. India also take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series.

Back to back wickets for Windies. Shardul Thakur departs cheaply right after the wicket of Ishan Kishan. Rohit Sharma walks in at number 7. 

Unlucky Hardik Pandya but Windies won't mind it one bit. Ishan Kishan striked it hard but it ricochet off Cariah hand's and hit the stumps, where Hardik was found short off his crease.

Ravindra Jadeja strikes for the first time in the match as Windies lose their 4th wicket. Shimron Hetmyer is the latest to depart. Windies are in a disarray.

Some respite for West Indies as captain Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer have steadied the ship somewhat. Umran Malik brought back into the attack after the attack.

First over for Mukesh Kumar in his ODI debut is a maiden. He kept bowling at the same line and length giving Kyle Mayers nothing.

Kyle Mayers and Brandon King to open the batting for West Indies in the middle. We are in a surprise as Hardik Pandya will open the bowling for India.

Every series means a lot. We've got to play each game and each series to win. Now is a good opportunity to do so against a top team. We have got some quality spinners as well. We will try to put up a good score on the surface. There will be a bit moisture and we need to be bat carefully in the beginning.

We are gonna field first, no particular reason. We are gonna try a few different things. We want to head into the World Cup with a clear mindset. For us, the results are also important. At times, we are going to try out different players but the results are important for us. All cricketers around the world who are playing all formats need to adapt well. Hopefully, we can get what we want here. We have got four seamers and two spinners.

In the absence of Jason Holder, Keemo Paul and Nicholas Pooran, expect the likes of Gudakesh Motie, Yannic Cariah, Alick Athanaze and Jayden Seales to be tried out as West Indies eye rebuild in ODIs, with India busy around preparation for the World Cup.

Shai Hope and Brandon King will be the leaders with the bat, with the return of Shimron Hetmyer being a huge boost. Hetmyer hasn't played in ODIs for West Indies since July 2021 but averages 45.45 against India.

West Indies, on the other hand, will be considering this series as a new beginning to get back to being the force to reckon with in the format after missing the bus for this year's ODI World Cup via the defeats in the Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

India also have to see if Malik, who has fared better in ODIs than T20Is, can be the x-factor pace-bowling option alongside Mohammed Siraj, with either Jaydev Unadkat or Mukesh Kumar to be the third pacer.

With Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja expected to start, India have to make a toss-up between the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal for the second spinner duties.

Samson, on the other hand, has put up good performances in the sporadic chances he got in ODIs and has an opportunity in the form of three consecutive matches in the Caribbean to put up consistent performances.

Kishan, the left-handed batter, hasn't been able to set the ODI stage on fire after his sensational double-hundred against Bangladesh at Chattogram last year.

With Shreyas Iyer out, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to be given a chance for batting at number four despite recording a hat-trick of ducks in the ODIs against Australia in March. In the absence of KL Rahul, who's on the road to recovery from a right thigh injury, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson will be competing for the wicketkeeper's spot in the playing eleven.

With many regulars of the Indian team still on the road to recovery from injuries of various kind, the series against the West Indies presents a chance for the likes of Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Umran Malik to strengthen their case for playing a home ODI World Cup.
