JE Sports Desk: Rohit Sharma-led India will embark on their World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle with two-match Test series against West Indies, starting on Wednesday, July 12 at Windsor Park in Dominica.
In the WTC cycle 2021-23, India finished second behind eventual champions Australia as they faced a massive defeat in the summit clash at The Oval last month.
Taking lessons from the recent WTC Final defeat, India made a bold move by dropping Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav from the Test squad and roped in fresh faces including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar.
However, Ajinkya Rahane's elevation as vice-captain after his 89 and 46 contributions against Australia in London. India have started the transition phase in Test cricket with a focus on IPL and domestic performers in the upcoming red-ball series.
In the absence of injured Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan will compete for the wicketkeeper role in the side. While the fast bowling will likely be spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Jayadev Unadkat as senior pacer Mohammed Shami was given rest for the tour.
On the other hand, West Indies have nothing to lose and will play for their pride after failing to qualify for the ODI World Cup for the first time since the inception of the tournament. The hosts recalled spinner Rahkeem Cornwall for two-match series and also handed maiden call-ups to Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze under the captaincy of Kraigg Brathwaite.
