IND vs WI 1st Test Highlights: Ashwin Takes 12 Wickets In Match To Give India A Convincing Win In Dominica

Wicket! It's a convincing win for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team as they dominated West Indies to beat them by an innings and 141 runs to go 1-0 up in the series. Understandably Ashwin is the star of the match with another superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal shining on his Test debut. And considerable efforts from Rohit, Virat, and Jadeja as well. A complete win for India in three days.

Wicket! And it's a collapse for the hosts as Ashwin gets another. Roach departs for 0.

Wicket! So it's 10 in the match for Ravi Ashwin as he gets Cornwall 4 runs.

Cornwall did well there to first defend a few balls and then attack a loose ball to find a boundary to open his account in style.

Another good over from Jaddu as the visitors close in on a convincing win.

Wicket! It was coming though as Alzarri once again tried to take the aerial route but only managed to find Shubman Gill at deep mid-wicket. West Indies go seven down now.

Jadeja did well there with a tight over as he never allowed the batters to open their arms against him. Just one run off the over.

It looks tough to play Ashwin at the moment but Alzarri is just hanging around in the middle and playing his shots with Holder trying to keep his wicket alive as well. Another six for the hosts and it's seven in Ashwin's over.

Holder just survived in that over as the ball fell in between Jaiswal and Virat but the Windies pair managed to take four runs off the over.

Alzarri did enough to ruin that Ashwin over with a six straight down the ground. However, it looks just a matter of time before India gets another wicket.

Wicket! This time Jaiswal makes no mistake at short leg as Ashwin removes Athanaze for 28 runs. The off-spinner gets his third of the innings and eighth of the match.

Another maiden over from Jadeja with Ishan doing his things behind the wicket.

Wicket! It took only three balls for Siraj in the new spell to find a wicket as he plumbs Da Silva in front for 13 runs.

Wicket! West Indies are in huge trouble as the wickets are falling in quick succession now. Reifer departs for 11 runs.

Wicket! Ashwin gets another wicket as he dismisses Jermaine Blackwood for 5 runs. West Indies are three down now.

Another session goes to team India as they managed to find two wickets just before the break after declaring their first innings for a mammoth total. The visitors have the upper hand and are way ahead in the game now.

Wicket! Rahane makes no mistake at the first slip as Ashwin gets West Indies captain to add another scalp to his wickets tally in the longer format.

Wicket! The decision turns out to be in India's favor as the visitors get the first wicket. Chanderpaul departs for 7.

West Indies captain has faced 29 balls and hasn't scored a single run yet as the hosts are off to a cautious start in their second innings.

Wicket! Athanaze makes no mistake at leg slip as Cornwall gets the big fish on his return to the Test side. Virat departs for 76 runs.

So that will be lunch on day 3 as Virat Kohli heads back to the pavilion with Ravindra Jadeja having put India way ahead in the game. Jaiswal and Rahane's wickets were the only success for the hosts.

Another good over for India as Virat and Jadeja get seven runs off the Brathwaite's over.

Fifty! Virat plays it towards deep mid-wicket and with this single, he reaches another Test half-century. An innings full of patience from the star batter.

Wicket! Blackwood makes no mistake as Ajinkya Rahane registers a failure and departs for just 3 runs. Roach gets his first success of the match. 

Wicket! Finally, West Indies find success as Yashasvi Jaiswal departs after a well-made 171. Alzarri Joseph gets his first wicket of the match.

100-run partnership up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the former heading towards another Test half-century. Five runs off Alzarri's over.

And that single gives Yashasvi Jaiswal another milestone on his Test debut as he reaches 150 runs. 

Jaiswal gets a single and Virat picks a double in Holder's over to add another three runs to India's mammoth total.

Virat Kohli has surpassed Virender Sehwag's tally to become the 5th highest Test run-getter for India with 8,515 runs.

I think this is one of the emotional knocks for me, it's difficult to get opportunities in the Indian team, I would like to thank everyone, the supporters, team management, and Rohit Bhai. The pitch is on the slower side and the outfield is very slow, it was difficult and challenging, and it was pretty hot and I wanted to keep doing it for my country, just play ball-by-ball and enjoy my cricket. I love Test cricket, I like this challenge, and I enjoy the situation when the ball swings and seams. We have worked hard on everything, I've just gone out to express myself. So that will be stumps on Day 2 as India scored 67 runs in the 32 overs bowled in the final session with Yashasvi Jaiswal (143) and Virat Kohli (36) still at the crease.

Virat Kohli surpasses Virender Sehwag to become India's fifth-highest run-getter in Tests.

More trouble for West Indies as Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched a 50-run stand for the third wicket. This could take the game far away from the hosts if they didn't manage to find a breakthrough as soon as possible.

That was plumb as it showed on the giant screen and the expressions on the face of Kemar Roach said it all as Jaiswal survives after being given not out on the field. Remember West Indians have no reviews left

Jaiswal was beaten on the edge in the last ball and barely survived as the batters added another three runs to their total.

Joshua Da Silva was confident enough to convince his skipper for review but it was the bat hitting the ground rather than hitting the ball. Virat survives as another West Indies review goes unsuccessful.

Warrican did well to force Kohli to play the remaining balls after conceding just a single in the over. 

West Indies made a late comeback with a couple of wickets in the session but India still stand strong with Yashasvi Jaiswal still at the crease with Virat Kohli and plenty of batting to come as well.

Out! So there's the first breakthrough for the hosts as skipper Rohit Sharma departs right after hitting his 10th Test century.

Rohit ends the over with a four to ruin Roach's figure as he gave away seven runs to make it easy for the Indian openers.

Century! Young Yashasvi shines on his Test debut as he smashes a remarkable century to put India in a strong position and is putting up a show with his skipper Rohit alongside.

Another disappointing over for the hosts as Warrican gave away 7 runs to add a few more to India's total with the openers making it tough for the Windies bowlers.

Jaiswal plays three dot balls in a row to finish another Alzarri over as the bowler gave away just one run with both the openers approaching the three-figure mark.

Another positive moment for India in the match as they take first innings lead and will now look to extend their strong position in the game with Rohit and Jaiswal still at the crease.

Another session belongs to India as they scored 66 runs without losing any wickets with both the openers hitting their respective half-centuries. Lunch has been taken on Day 2 for the first Test in Dominica.

After a few nervy moments earlier, there are no signs of a wicket for the hosts as Rohit and Jaiswal are set for a big score.

Cornwall has been the better bowler for the hosts so far having beaten the Indian pair a few times now but still hasn't been able to fund a success so far. Another maiden over for the spinner.

Yashasvi Jaiswal shows great resilience and reaches half-century on debut with that remarkable shot.

India's opening duo hasn't faced any tough situations yet on the second day as they continue to get easy runs with both the players heading towards their respective half-centuries.

No runs added to the overnight score as Yashasvi Jaiswal sees off the opening over of day 2.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was handed over the debut cap for the first Test against West Indies as the youngster quickly came into action with the bat on the opening day of the match.

Jaiswal faced a nervy moment as he took a few balls to get off the mark in Test cricket but showed a great confident display of batting later in the innings and finished the day with 40 runs featuring some remarkable shots.

The 36-year-old Ashwin became the third Indian to reach the 700-wicket milestone in international cricket and is only behind Harbhajan Singh (711 wickets) and Anil Kumble (956) in the all-time list.

"I came, I landed in Barbados. I felt a bit of jet lag, as I came from the TNPL. I felt like my shoulder, the arms speed and you know, the body position and the crease wasn't really ideal. The first day at Barbados when we played on the practice surface, the next was okay, the practice game, Ashwin said in a video tweeted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

"The first day I didn't feel 'Okay' at all. On the second day, I did another 8 to 10 overs. That was slightly better. So I just felt like with the jet lag and the amount of workload, my shoulder, rotational speed, the body going through into the ball, all these things take a certain amount of time and what happens is sometimes you're playing really slow and turning surfaces," he said.

“Sir, it’s very tough. As a cricketer, when you have a shot at the WTC final, to be sitting out…all that is fine. But what is the difference between me and another youngster or another person if I also end up sulking inside the dressing room? When we went for the WTC final, I was mentally and physically prepared to play, planned for the game but I was also prepared to be not playing the game," Ashwin opened up about missing out on WTC Final after the end of the day's play.

Rohit Sharma (30*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) provided a great start to India's first innings and took a massive step towards the way to victory. The duo will just look to take from where they left off on the opening day and help their team strengthen the grip on the first Test.

India have stamped their authority in the test match as both openers (Jaiswal, Rohit) walk out unbeaten on Day 1. All sessions have gone in the favour of India. India finish their day on 80/0 at the end of 23 overs. They trail by 70 runs. 

The drizzle has gone away as the sunlight is all over the Windsor Park. The play resumes...

Rain has interrupted the play as India are in commanding position at 66/0 after 15.5 overs. They trail by 84 runs with Rohit and Yashasvi at the crease. 

This is a healthy start for India. Both Rohit and Yashasvi are scoring at a nice run-rate here in Windsor Park. Rahkeem Cornwall to continue from one end.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his intentions clear as he tried to pull the first delivery out of the ground by Kemar Roach but to no avail. Rohit probably asked him to take it easy as young Jaiswal negotiated the first over well.

Hello and welcome to the post-tea session of day 1 of the first test between India and West Indies here at the Windsor Park in Dominica. Rahkeem Cornwall has decided to take on the bowlers as he scored two boundaries against Ashwin in the last over.

Umpires have called for Tea as India finish a fine post-lunch session on Day 1 of the first test. Windies are reeling at 137/8 after 58 overs with Rahkeem Cornwall and Kemar Roach unbeaten. We will be back for the final session soon. Stay tuned!

OH!! That is a bad shot from a player who has looked his best among all the Windies batters. Alick Athanaze misses out on a half century to depart on 47. Windies on the brink at 129/8 after 55 overs.

Ashwin has picked up his 3rd wicket as Alzarri Joseph falls to a carrom ball. Rahkeem Cornwall is the new batter in. WI tottering at 124/7 at 52.4 overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin brought back into the attack as India have reached the tail of the visitors. Alzarri Joseph can bat but it will be difficult to operate in front of a relentless bowling attack.

This is an incredibly dry surface at the Windsor Park. There is significant amount of turn in this wicket. India have to get them out early.

Holder and Athanaze are not able to collect runs freely at the moment. Excellent captaincy from Rohit Sharma who has choked the flow completely.

Hello and welcome to the post lunch session. India have taken up a review first up as Shardul Thakur has struck the pads for Joshua Da Silva. It looks like it is missing the wickets. Missing WICKETS. 

That is an absolute stunner from Siraj. Jermaine Blackwood has thrown away his wicket. West Indies have lost their 4th wicket at the stroke of lunch. Jadeja gets one as well. WI 68/4 after 28 overs.

Jermaine Blackwood has the potential to bail Windies out of this situation. The young Alick Athanaze has also looked confident in his short innings so far. 

Shardul Thakur gets the edge and Ishan Kishan has taken a brilliant low catch. Raymon Reifer departs. This has been a tremendous start by Team India. 

Ashwin has been the most challenging bowler for Windies to face so far. Jermaine Blackwood and Reifer have quite a task on their hands. 

Ravichandran Ashwin gets the captain of West Indies. Brathwaite, who was looking to attack the experienced campaigner is out for 20. WI are 38/2 at the end of 16.3 overs.

Kraigg Brathwaite is looking to go for the ariel route against Ravichandran Ashwin. He has been successful so far but it will be interesting to see how far this game takes him. Raymon Reifer is the new batter in and Siraj is all over him at the moment.

There are some dark clouds hovering over the ground with some occasional sunlight in between. So far, the overcast conditions had no impact on the play. Ashwin to continue.

The championship cycle final is two years away, but we've been consistent over the last couple of cycles. New guys in the squad, we just want to keep better as a team. I want the two debutants to enjoy, they've worked hard to come here, I want to make them feel comfortable and have some good memories of their first Test," said Rohit Sharma.

"We are batting first, the surface is generally dry, bit of moisture, we'll have to work hard in the first hour. We had a 10-day camp, Brian Lara was there as well, had a practice game amongst ourselves, looking good. We have been in good positions during the last cycle, but it's all about being consistent. Want to see the guys be positive. Athanaze is making his debut, Cornwall and Warrican are the two spinners, Kirk McKenzie and Shannon Gabriel miss out," said West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite at the toss.

West Indies have won the toss and opted to bat first against India in Dominica. India handed debut cap to opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan in the first match of the series.

“I am feeling great, congratulation to you too, you have also been selected for the test side. It is a really good feeling and I am looking forward to it," Jaiswal said in the video posted by BCCI.

"I was happy (hearing about his selection into the side), for me the test is the true form of cricket, when I was growing up, I always wanted to be in the test team,” he added.

Virat Kohli was part of India's playing 11 when the team last played at Windsor Park in Dominica in 2011. His teammates were current head coach Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman. Currently, he is the only member in the squad to be part of that Test side. He does not have a good outing in that match and will be eager to better his record this time after a long gap of 12 years.

"Looking at the wicket, I think we might go in with two spinners and three seamers. The last Test match played here was in 2017 and the spinners picked a lot of the wickets (18 of 38). Having trained here for days, we noticed there has been a lot of bounce. Think we will play a 3-2 combination," said India captain Rohit Sharma.

After missing the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval last month, Ravichandran Ashwin is most likely to partner with Ravichandran Jadeja in the first Test against West Indies. Another left-arm spinner Axar Patel is in the squad for the spot of the second spinner.    

There are high chance that Ishan Kishan will be given a chance against KS Bharat for the wicketkeeping role as India are testing all options on this tour. Bharat has done good work for India in the absence of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul but his batting has not been up to the mark. Kishan will be crucial in the middle order with his flamboyant batting skills.

"When we went to the dressing room and practice session in Dominica and I can remember my first series here as a Test player. This is the country where it all started. And coming here to play after 12 years, having played 100-plus Test matches. This is just amazing. I had never imagined anything like this," said Kohli in a video posted by BCCI.

"We all looked up Rahul bhai, we are blessed, only two members from 2011, life has come full circle & it has been amazing," he added.

The 24-year-old young batter Alick Athanaze will get the debut maroon cap in today. The left-handed batter is a promising talent for West Indies as he averages over 35 in 30 first-class matches and can also bowl off-spin when needed in the five-day affair.  

India captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday confirmed that Yashasvi Jaiswal will play his debut Test in the first match of the series. He will open the innings with Rohit to maintain the right-left batting combination. Rohit's regular opening partner Shubman Gill will play at no. 3 spot. India will play with three seamers and two spinners in the opening match of the tour in Dominica.
