India faced a comprehensive 38-run defeat against England in the first T20I of their three-match series. Opting to bowl first, India's fielding and bowling performance fell short, allowing England to post a challenging total of 197/6. In response, India managed only 158/6 in 20 overs, with only Shafali Verma (52 off 42 balls) making a significant contribution. Sophie Ecclestone, the left-arm spinner, was the standout bowler for England, securing figures of 3/15. Despite Shafali's valiant effort, India failed to mount a serious challenge to the target, needing 74 runs from the last five overs.
England's marauding fifties by Danni Wyatt (75) and Natalie Sciver-Brunt (77) laid the foundation for their imposing total. The duo put on a record 138-run stand for the third wicket, marking England's first century partnership against India in T20Is. Renuka Singh Thakur, the Indian seamer, was the standout bowler for India, taking three wickets for 27 runs. Wyatt's innings featured eight fours and two sixes, while Sciver-Brunt smacked 13 fours on her way to a brisk 53-ball 77.
In the fielding department, England outperformed India, with their players taking most of the chances that came their way. The loss in the first T20I means India now trails England 1-0 in the three-match series.
Brief Scores:
England: 197 for 6 in 20 overs (Danielle Wyatt 75, Nat Sciver-Brunt 77; Renuka Thakur Singh 3/27).
