Gautam Gambhir Press Conference: The newly appointed head coach of Team India Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on Monday also confirmed the appointment of former Indian all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and Netherlands batter as assistant coaches ahead of the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
Notably, both Nayar and Ryan have worked with Gautam in the past and the trio played a huge role in guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title victory. Their first assignment with the Indian team will start on July 27 in a six-match white-ball away series against Sri Lanka.
In his first press conference as Team India's head coach on Monday in Mumbai, Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar discussed the future of Indian cricket after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from T20I format.
"Really happy. The BCCI. They have agreed to most of the things I have asked for. I keep reading this stuff. Abhishek, as assistant coach. And Ryan Ten Doeschate, as an assistant coach. You will get to know the exact support staff after the Sri Lanka series. Abhishek Nayar is there. Sairaj Bahutule is there. Dilip is there. Ryan will join in Colombo," Gambhir stated during a media briefing ahead of the tour on Monday.
"This is the crux of the coaching staff. But we have a lot of time. We will have time after the Sri Lanka series. I have had some really good feedback from the players. I hope Abhishek and Ryan have a successful stint as coaches." Gambhir said.
The new coaching staff will have a retained member from Rahul Dravid's tenure, such as T Dilip, who will continue as the fielding coach. However, Gambhir did not provide any update about who will replace Vikram Rathour as batting coach.
