India vs England 1st Test, Highlights: KL Rahul Near 50 As Stumps Called On Day 3 With India At 90/2, Lead By 96 Runs

KL Rahul stood strong for India in the third session as rain forced early stumps on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against England with visitors leading by 96 runs. 

Stokes does it for England. Sai Sudharsan played a loose shot to short mid-wicket, and the fielder took the catch with ease. Shubman Gill is the next man to walk in.

A fortunate moment for the batter! KL Rahul narrowly escapes while attempting to take a single. Chris Woakes' throw from mid-on lacked power sailing over the non-striker's end.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has knicked one straight to the wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who takes a comfortable catch off pumped-up Brydon Carse's top delivery.

India's second innings is underway with Yashasvi Jaiswal facing Chris Woakes. With strong wind at the moment, commentators can see the rain coming towards the ground from a distance. 

The Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah comes in and just cleans up Josh Tongue to bundle out England for 465 as India take a 6-run lead heading into the second innings. 

Jasprit Bumrah delivers beauty with full and angling into the stumps and cleans up Chris Woakes, who plays a brilliant 38 as the lead has been cut short to 11.

Mohammed Siraj provides big relief for India as he removes well-set Byrdon Carse for 22, breaking a 55-run stand (44 balls).

Harry Brook got three lives and his luck finally runs out! Brook narrowly misses out on his first Test hundred against India, and his first on his home ground. Prasidh Krishna with the big wicket and well, Brook's luck finally runs out. 

Brook slams Mohammed Siraj's second over for 11 runs with the 2nd new ball. Harry Brook moves into the 80s with two attacking fours. 

A rare poor over from Bumrah as he accepts the fresh new ball. Two deliveries down leg, a couple too wide. 

Three overs top the new ball and India with a short-ball planb early on to try and unsettle Harry Brook. 

Thats lunch, Bumrah's two-over spell before the brak not yielding much-but the second new ball due in 3 overs after the new session begins. 

Good session for India with their wickets, but England still findng runs to close deficit to just 144. Brook batting well, with some chances on 57 not out. With the second new ball due, India could either run through England quickly or allow England to lose the distance very quickly. 

England reached the 300-run mark and its India with another missed chance. Very tough one for Pant as a good length delivery from Jadeja explodes with extra bounce. Catches the shoulder of Brook's bat, Pant can' get his gloves up enough. It could loop anywhere but falls just beyond Gill. India making plenty of chances. 

Shardul Thakur comes into the attack and nearly gets immediate results. Smith tries to come down the pitch, bt a very full ball strikes him on the pads. The umpire does gives it out, but its an immediate review- and on hawkeye it slides down leg stump. Close but not quite. 

Big wicket. Siraj comes around to wicket to Stokes and its a loose shot from the English captain. Not decisive as he pokes at it, catches a significant edge and Pant completes the formalities. 

India will be happier now, one more wicket and they wi;; be into the bowlers. 

A first hour that India found an early wicket with, but have since found minimal joy with. The deficit down to 203 and India will be aware that Brook is someone capabke of big scores on such pitches. 

Stokes and Brook ticking it along nicely at the moment, picking up runs and boundaries with relative confidence. The early signs of bite already fading and India take a look at the ball, trying to get it changed. 

Harry Brook striking the ball well aginst the pacers and that means Shubman Gill has turned to Ravindra Jadeja. Brook might look to turn it over to Stokes to take the attack instead. 

Brook has looked solid so far this morning and is playing incredible shots for boundaries time and time again. Six runs came off that over from Prasidh.

Something to keep an eye on is the weather. Leeds is expected to receive rain over the next couple of days. We have already lost one hour of play yesterday and with rain expected in the daily forecast, teams will be hoping its not too much today. Better news for India if such are the conditions? Possibly. 

Joe Root has become the top run-getter in the India vs England Test matches on English soil. He went past Sachin Tendulkar's tally on the second day of the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Leeds. 

The first outing with the ball in this series brought major concerns for India on the second day of the first Test as bowlers struggled for success, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, who took all three wickets.

Bumrah lacked support and had to bowl the second-most overs for the visitors, which has brought back the debate of his workload. While Bumrah will only be playing just three Tests, India will have to find solutions in the absence of their star pacer as well if they want to capitalise on this all-important series. Also, back to back spells could give rise to Bumrah's fitness issue who faced the same during the Australia tour. 

"He is the best bowler in the world," Duckett said after the day’s play. "He’s extremely hard to face. He’s good in any conditions; he’s good in India on the flattest pitches ever and when he’s coming in down the hill at Headingley with the lights on and it’s swinging both ways. I feel like we minimised the damage early on.

"It could have been a lot worse today… He is just a world-class bowler, and you can’t let someone like him just bowl; he’s too good for that. You’ve got to still try and put him under pressure, and try to put the bad balls away," he added.

Jasprit Bumrah created yet another incredible record as he became the most successful Asian bowler in SENA countries in Test history. In 32 matches, Bumrah now has 148 wickets to his name in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and South Africa) countries. He went past Wasim Akram to achieve the feat on the second day of the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Leeds. 

Bumrah has been in remarkable form across formats lately, and he produced another heroic effort on the second day in Leeds. Despite the lack of support from fellow bowlers, Bumrah kept India alive in the contest after England's fiery batting effort. He has taken all three wickets so far, dismissing Zak Crawley (4), Duckett (62), and Joe Root (28).

On the back of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, skipper Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, India successfully reached a massive total, but a remarkable comeback from the England bowlers helped them bowl the visitors out for 471 runs early in the second day. 

The hosts had a promising outing with the bat as well, as they reached 209/3 in their first innings in just around two sessions. Ollie Pope smashed a magnificent century while Ben Duckett played a 62-run knock. They are still 262 runs behind. For India, Jasprit Bumrah took all the three wickets.

England remained in the contest on the back of a remarkable batting effort late on the second day after bowling India out for 471 runs. Joe Root got an early scare after he started a bit scratchy. He looks solid now and hitting the ball well. Danger sign for India as they need him early in the innings. 

England batters have put up a solid effort against the Indian bowling attack. Jasprit Bumrah is back into the attack. It will be interesting when is Shardul Thakur brought into the attack. OUT!!!!! Bumrah gets Duckett.

A much needed break for Shubman Gill and his troops. Apart from one wicket, England have pretty much scored well and at their will. England 107/1 (24) with Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in the middle.

This partnership gets bigger and better by the passage of time. Credit to the positive approach by these batters, who are scoring at a brisk rate. Ravindra Jadeja to continue from one end.

India need to break this stand soon. These guys will keep the scorecard ticking with their shots. Pope is playing at a healthy strike-rate. On the other hand, Duckett is just keeping it at par.

After the fall of Zak Crawley, England batters Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope have somewhat played well to counter the attack of Bumrah and Siraj. Their technique looks solid to score on this pitch.

Such an anticlimax. India have their huddle, head to their places on the field. Duckett and Crawly rady to com out and suddenly the heavens open. The covers come out and the players have to walk off. What a shame but this is what we expected. A little bit of weather playing a role. 

Thats that. Tongue with an inch-perfect yorker and Prasidh nowhere close. Its been a very strong fightback by England after dismissing Gill, who have taken 7 for 41 either side of the lunch. 

So its 471 that India have scored. They would take that as England after starting at 550 plus not too long ago. 

Bumrah's stay doesn't last long. He gets one off the pads for four but then pokes at one outside-off stump which is snapped up at slips. 

Three centuries and now three ducks in this innings. 

India's target from here will be 500, with Jadeja the last recognised batter in this lineup. Can the experienced all-rounder turn up for his team. 

Its all gone horribly wrong towards the end of this session with India trying to be aggressive. Shardul fresh to the crease and he is trying to have an impact. But its stokes in the last over before lunch and its not the ball to chase. A thick edge easily pouched by Jamie Smith. 

India have gone from 430-3 to 454-7. England with a very successful perios of play. 

One-handed sixes, no-handed wild swipes, flips and somersaults to celebrate his century and now his shoe falling loose as he runs through for a single. The Rishabh Pant experience. 

Pant slog sweeps Bashir for a six with all the fielders on th boundary. No slowing down as he goes for it again, but is beaten up at all ends by Bashir. His bat goes toward fine leg but Jamie Smith with all the time in the world could not collect it cleanly. That should have been two wickets in two overs for Bashir, but instead Pant will keep going after it. 

This partnership past 200 as well now. Just some excellent batting to mount the pressure on England, who are left scratching their heads at the moment, 100 overs bowled and this innings nowhere near its conclusion. 

Add another to the strange moments throughout this innings. Pant and Gill hustlle through for a single and Duckett has a shy at the stumps from short third. Only one problem- Harry Brook is in his way and the ball strikes him flush in his side. Reactions from everyone in the stadium but Brook can laught it off. Pant looking for his century on the other side. 

Pant was fairly timid against Bashir yesterday, but needs no second invitation today. Gets a shortish one, rocks back and deposits him over mid-wicket. Its a towering six that takes him into the 90s and India past 400.

England have started with the field spread on the leg side and the south paw can just calmly tuck it towards square leg and rotate the strike with ease. Much more attacking field against Gill, for whom all the angles down the ground have been cut off, asking him to play behind square. 

There has been a massive struggle for England's bowlers so far in this Test match, and things haven't looked promising this morning as well. However, that was a disciplined over from Woakes as just one run came off it.

The overhead conditions seem to be incredibly sunny at the moment here in Leeds ahead of the action on the second day, but the weather is expected to turn a bit cloudy in the upcoming sessions. Little showers could also be expected as the game progressess which means India might get assistance massively if they get to bowl later in the day after scoring a massive total.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill showcased the strength and depth of India's new look batting depth, dispelling any doubts in the post Kohli-Rohit aera. Both youngsters rose to the occasion in style on Day 1 of the first Test, scoring impressive centuries to lay a solid foundation for the visitors. Jaiswal brought up a fliud 101 in his 1st Test on English soil, while skipper Gill remained unbeaten on a commanding 127. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal began experiencing cramps in his hands as he entered the 80s, but didn't linger long in the nervous 90s, reaching his century in just six deliveries. He brought up his hundred off 144 balls, laced with 16 boundaries and one towering six over deep point. His celebration was spirited, marked by a helmet swing and fist pump in the air. However, his innings came to an abrupt end right after the tea break as a sharp delivery from Ben Stokes crashed into his leg stump and dismissing him for a well-made 101 runs.

"Whenever I make a century, wherever it is, I enjoy it. I love it as all my centuries are special. But of course, there are some special moments…first century in England," Jaiswal said in the post-day press meet.

"The strategy was to put away the bad balls, time, and place the shots well. I was just thinking about handling the situation, where the England team was keeping fielders, or in which areas they were bowling.

"I was just trying to bat accordingly. I was batting as per the needs of the team," he said.

After being put into bat first, India posted a huge total of 359/3 in 85 overs on the first day of the Leeds Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and Shubman Gill (127*) smashed incredible centuries, whereas Rishabh Pant also scored a promising fifty. Gill and Pant (65*) have stitched an unbeaten partnership of 138 runs for the fourth wicket. KL Rahul made a contribution of 42 runs. For England, skipper Ben Stokes picked up two wickets whereas Brydon Carse found a success as well.

A strong response to England's decision of bowling first as India finish Day 1 on 359 for 3 at the end of 85 overs. Shubman Gill remains unbeaten on 138 whereas his deputy Rishabh Pant too remained not-out on 65.

The flow of runs has definitely slowed down but it is not much of a concern for both these batters. Shubman Gill who is batting on 87 is looking to make a mark with his maiden ton in England. 

Rishabh Pant is being tested on the fourth stump length by the off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. It will be interesting to see if the vice-captain does take the bait from England. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes is bowling incredibly well to create some chances.

Indian captain Shubman Gill has reached his fifty. This is one of the most composed fifties for Shubman Gill in his test career. He has found a great partner in Yashasvi Jaiswal who is approaching another test hundred. 

Ben Stokes has passed the ball to off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. A gamble for England perhaps as they will need to get a wicket soon to break this stand. Shubman Gill has raced to 40 off 44 without breaking much sweat. IND 164/2 (39.3)

This has been a magnificent effort from Jaiswal so far as he completes his fifty. This partnership is growing well and skipper Gill also has played some incredible shots. India are in a promising position at the moment in this second session. 3 runs came off that over from Tongue.

That'll be the lunch on day one and this has been an interesting first session of this five-match series. Jaiswal and Rahul gave India a magnficent start before England bounced back with a couple of late blows.

Jasprit Bumrah will be playing three Tests in the series amid fitness concerns, but is all pumped up to make an impact again. He has been India's biggest match-winner across formats for a while now. 

"Plan on the go. 3 test matches are what I am looking at. First is definitely on. The rest we will see what is the plan. Yes, that is going to happen. Rest, we see how things are. What is the workload? What is the scenario. 3 Test matches is what I can manage at this moment. I don't want to be in a desperate situation. That is one part of it, as a captain, I cannot be dictating, I will only play 3 matches. That does not send a good message to the team. So, of all these things keeping n mind. Trying to give my best as a player. Hopefully, in the games I play, I give my best," said Bumrah.

The biggest challenge for India will be to fill in for the legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the batting order. With a lack of experience in Sai Sudharsan and others, and Karun Nair's comeback, India have a massive challenge ahead. Notably, Virat and Rohit retired from Test cricket ahead of the all-important tour. KL Rahul has a huge responsibility as he is the most senior batter in the setup. 

"I think the Test series that we played against England in India was one of the best series that I have been part of. And even in that Test series, not many of our senior players were available in every match. And how we went about that series was the way that I think this series is also going to be. I mean, if you look at the series scorecard, I think it was about 4-1, but the number wasn't really justified by how tough that series was for us."

The five-match series will mark the new era in Indian test cricket under new skipper Shubman Gill, post the retirements of a few legends. It will also be the beginning of India's campaign in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. They also have a chance to win their first Test series win on English soil since 2007.

It could well be. The BCCI just an hour back posted a video where Karun Nair opened up on his long wait to return to India's XI. He kep on mentioning being part of the playing XI, rathe than just the squad. Ofcourse, by no means this is a guarantee that Nair is set to play his first Test match for India since 2017. But this clearly reflects his mindset. Besides, yesterday, Nair was seen having a long go in the nets, wheras Sai Sudharsan simply warmed up. And why not? Nair has excelled while batting in Englishg conditions. He may have yet to play a Test match, but for India A, he struck two double centuries against England Lions in two years. How do you leave him out?
