A magnificent session for England despite losing a couple of big early wickets. Jamie Smith smashed a magnificent century in just 80 balls. Smith (102) and Brook (91) have added 165 runs for the sixth wicket as England reach 249/5 at lunch.

England's spin bowling coach felt that his team can still win despite trailing India by 510 runs and seven wickets in hand. England ended day two at 77 for three. It will be interesting to see how the overnight batters - Joe Root and Harry Brook approach the innings further.

It was a followed by a burst of swing bowling for India as they removed the top-three batters cheaply on a comparitively flatter track. 

Gill struck 269 off 387 balls to become the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England as India posted a massive 587 on day two of the second Test here on Thursday. He had scored a hundred in the series-opener in Leeds.

They also took three early wickets but Joe Root (18) and Harry Brook (30) did well to take England to 77/3 in 20 overs in their first innings. They still trail by 510 runs. India have been bowled out for 587 runs in their first innings in 151 overs at Edgbaston. Shubman Gill was India's top run-getter with a 269-run knock, whereas Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89) hit crucial fifties. Washington Sundar made a contribution of 42 runs as well.

For England, Shoaib Bashir was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to his name.

The tea has been taken, and this has been an incredible session for India as Shubman Gill's double century helps the visitors reach 564/7 in their first innings. Gill is unbeaten on 265 with Akash Deep at the other end. India scored 145 runs in the second session and lost just one wicket of Washington Sundar who was dismissed by Joe Root for 42.

Finally a wicket for England in this session. Joe Root breaks the 144-run stand, dismissing well-set Washington Sundar for 42. Sundar edges out to play a delivery that straightens and clips the middle stump. IND 558/7. 

Captain Shubman Gill brings up India's 500 with a fierce boundary off Brydon Carse. Meanwhile, India's controlling total marked only the sixth instance of a touring side breaching the 500-run mark in a Test innings at Edgbaston.

With a single off Tongue, Gill brings up his first double ton in Test and becomes the first Asian captain with a double-hundred in SENA countries. In celebration, he punches the air, removes the helmet, goes down on one knee and gives a fist-pump.

Josh Tongue concedes only one run, keeping the scoring tight for Washington Sundar and Shubman Gill. The pair will be looking for a partnership here. 

Another session that has belonged to India. Josh Tongue's dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja brings some welcome relief for England, but India now have their highest score at Edgbaston. Josh Tongue tried to lift England towards the end with a fiery little spell. At the time of Lunch, India's score read 419/6 with Shubman Gill (168) and Washington Sundar (1) standing unbeaten at the crease. 

Rip-roaring bumper ends Jadeja's stay at the crease. Tongue's absolute brute of a delivery breaks a superb partnership of 203 runs. 

The duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill are keeping England bowlers on their toes with their attacking shots, taking India's total past 400 runs. 200-run stand also comes up with that audacious six.

Shubman Gill with a batting masterclass at Edgbaston, brings up his 150, receiving a rousing applause from the crowd. He raises his bat in celebration!

Ravindra Jadeja takes the dynamic route and thrashes Ben Stokes, handing India a big over. All-rounder shoots two back-to-back boundaries as Stokes concedes eight runs. IND 343/5 (92 overs)

We are just minutes away from the proceedings of Day 2 of the Edgbaston test. Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja are ready to take the field with England players doing their warm-up. 

Gill, India's youngest Test captain, swept Root behind square to find the boundary rope for a four and then walloped the ball to close out a memorable hundred in Birmingham. He became the fourth Indian captain to blaze his way to centuries in his first two Tests as India captain after Virat, Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar.

Speaking in a video posted by BCCI, Gill said, "We definitely want to win this Test match and the series." While India lost wickets in a cluster, Gill continued to torment England with his flawless approach. He remained unfazed and continued to find gaps to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Gill dazzled in the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday with a blend of caution and aggression. At Stumps on Day 1, Gill finished his innings at unbeaten 114* runs, which came off 216 balls with the help of 12 boundaries.

Following his second Test century in the ongoing England tour, India Test captain Shubman Gill has clarified that the visitors are here not only to win the Test match but also to win the series.

After the end of the first session, India reach 98 for 2 at the end of 25 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Shubman Gill remain unbeaten at lunch break. Brydon Carse removes Karun Nair and Chris Woakes got rid of KL Rahul early in the innings.

Just at the stroke of lunch, Karun Nair falls to a bumper. It was a snorter by Brydon Carse as Karun couldn't anything about it. Shubman Gill walks in to face the end of the first session. IND 95/2 (23.4)

Yashasvi Jaiswal does not let the talk around his fielding get to him as he gets to a stellar fifty in 59 deliveries. He is taking on the short stuff dished out by the English bowlers. IND 91/1 (22)

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair have gathered some boundaries to keep the scorecard ticking here on a hot day in Birmingham. Karun has taken his chances but kept his bat in check against the moving ball. 

Karun Nair is currently navigating his way through the early morning spell. The ball has not moved extravagantly, however, just doing much to get the outside much. Ben Stokes brings himself into the attack.

Big wicket for England early on. A drag-on to the stumps by KL Rahul who failed to leave the ball at this occasion. Caught in two-minds against Woakes, who got the early breakthrough. IND 15/1 (9.4)

A huge shout for LBW and that has been turned down by the umpire. Good length ball that nips in as Jaiswal gets forward to defend. Ball-tracking says it just about pitches in line with the leg stump, no inside edge either. It's an umpire's call as it only clips the top of the stumps. 

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal started his innings on a good note as he got a freebie and tucked it down to the boundary on the leg side off Chris Woakes' over. 

Players have lined up for the anthems. In a tribute to England player Wayne Larkins, who passed away a few days ago, both teams are wearing black armbands.

"We're going to bowl. Overhead conditions favour it. Did you consider everything (bringing Archer into the squad?). Very good team performance last week, we're confident. You understand the conditions better as you go deeper into the Test. Brains and me and Baz are not three things you put together. Great run chase, great Test to be part of great start to the series. Last week is last week, need to concentrate on this week," Ben Stokes said.

"Would've bowled first as well. If there's anything in the wicket, it's in the first day. Three changes - Reddy, Washi and Akash Deep come in. No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so decided to add some depth to the batting," India skipper said.

At the moment, it's cloudy in Edgbaston and rain could force a delayed toss. With showers lurking around the forecast and cloud cover hanging heavy, the rain interruption is likely on the cards.
