IND vs ENG 3rd Test: England's star batter Joe Root is currently their highest run-getter in the longest format and also in international cricket and during Day 1 of the third Test match, he scripted history as he had become the first English and fourth overall batter in world to have scored 4000 runs against India. He needed to score just 33 runs in order to join the 4000-run club against the Men in Blue and he achieved this milestone by smashing Mohammed Siraj for a four on the first ball during the 37th over.

Root, who is currently playing during his 33rd Test match against India, has scored 2989 runs against them, ever since he made his debut in this format way back in 2012 in Nagpur.

He has also represented England in 25 ODIs against India, where he had smashed three hundreds and four half-centuries and has scored 825 runs. He has played in seven T20Is against India and had scored 161 runs.

About three batters- Australia's Ricky Ponting, Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardhene and Kumar Sangakkara, have scored more runs against India than Root.

Ponting, who had helped Australia win consecutive ODI World Cup trophies way back in 2003 and 2007, has the record of scoring the most runs against the Men in Blue. In his 17-year long career, he had featured in 89 matches against India and had smashed 14 hundreds and 22 half-centuries and had scored 4795 runs.

His highest individual score was 257 runs against the Men in Blue during the 2003 Boxing Day Test held at MCG.

Ponting, who had represented Australia in 29 Test matches against the Men in Blue, had scored 2555 runs. He had played in 59 ODI matches against India and had scored 2164 runs, which also includes his career best knock of 140 runs during the 2003 ODI World Cup summit clash.

At the same time, he also played in one T20I against the Men in Blue, way back in October 2007 in Mumbai and had scored a brilliant knock of 76 runs off 53 balls, in which he had smashed 13 fours.
