IND vs ENG: Ex-India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has criticised star pacer Jasprit Bumrah's critics after he failed to perform during the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs for the first time in his career as he registered figures of 2/112 after bowling in 35 overs. The star fast bowler featured in three Test matches, of which they lost two and one ended in a tie.

Besides this, he took a five-for during the first and the third Test match. After India's thrilling victory in Bumrah's absence at the Oval, he has been slammed brutally by fans for not performing well during the recently concluded series. Dinesh Karthik then hit back at his critics and reckoned that it wasn't his fault that the Shubman Gill-led side lost in both the matches, where he played.

He also revealed that Bumrah would be considered as one of the greats after he announces his retirement from this format.

“Now this stat of when he doesn’t play, India does not win. It’s not his mistake. He is so impactful that others pale in comparison at times, which is understandable. He is a world champion. When he finishes cricket, he will be spoken in the same parlance as Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, and Dale Steyn. And I hope he will have a longer career knowing that I can pick and choose matches when I feel I am ready, because there is no more pressure that I am the only one, and at every match, I have to play. And at times, it’s unfair. It’s a body, he knows what he has gone through. 2 back injuries, one nasty ACL he had in 2014. It’s not easy, and sometimes I feel we have to cut him some slack as well,” Karthik was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz.

At the same time, Karthik also emphasised that by winning the fifth match at the Oval, the pressure was reduced on Bumrah, as the side found some match-winners in his absence.

“You have to look at it from Jasprit Bumrah’s point of view. I think that these kinds of wins, the way the series has panned out, the way the young team has fought, will help him in his career. I believe Jasprit Bumrah will be very proud of this young bowling attack, and knowing him, he is not someone who shies away from pressure, big matches. Boss, he is in the ground, as a captain, any big moment, you go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a wicket, go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a 5-an over in a T20 match, you go to Jasprit Bumrah. If you are bowling with a bad, old ball, which is 25 overs old in an ODI, and want a wicket, go to Jasprit Bumrah. That is the name he has earned, and he rightly deserves to be called that,” he added.

Bumrah had bowled in 119.4 overs after playing in three Test matches against England and had taken 14 wickets at a staggering average of 26 and a brilliant economy of 3.04. Before this series, Bumrah had said that he would be playing in just three matches, and the team management also decided not to push him to play during the fifth Test match despite everything at stake during the series.

At the same time, Bumrah will now be seen in action during the ODI series against Australia, which will be held later this year, and then he will also be playing the home Test series against West Indies and South Africa.
