IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Ex-England cricketer Michael Atherton has highlighted that towards the fag end of England's innings, India captain Shubman Gill was seen lying down as he received some treatment on the back and that could have been done outside the field and that the umpires have no control about the time being wasted issue. Atherton had slammed the on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfudoula, for allowing Gill to receive the treatment during the match, and that only further delayed the proceedings.

The incident occurred in the 110th over, when Gill was seen lying down on the ground and got treatment for his back, and that had stopped the match for a while.

“At one stage, towards the end of England’s innings, Gill lay down for treatment on his back and the umpires condoned a lengthy stoppage, instead of instructing him to leave the field, to allow play to resume," Atherton was quoted as saying to the times.

“From stoppages for minor injuries to delays for attempted ball changes to fussiness over the state of the popping crease, once the groundstaff was called on to flatten where the batters were standing," he said.

Gill had also urged the on-field umpires to change the ball lots of times on the third day and was also involved getting in heated arguments with the umpires which also led to the match getting delayed.

India's new Test captain Shubman Gill has already scored 600 runs after playing in just two Test matches, on the back of two centuries and one double ton. The ongoing five-match Test series is currently leveled at 1-1.

Gill, who had replaced Rohit Sharma as India's new Test skipper, has been in sublime form as he had scored match-winning knock of 269 and 161 runs during the second Test at Edgbaston and had smashed a century during the series opener in Headingley.

Earlier this week, he had also entered the top 10 ICC Test batters rankings for the first time on the back of his match-winning performance in Birmingham.
