IND vs ENG 1st Test: India's star wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is quite aware of how to play the numbers game and he understands how that works, as per ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri as Pant had performed brilliantly against England during the series opener. Pant had scored a brilliant knock of 134 runs off 178 balls, in which he had smashed 12 fours and six sixes and thus entertained the fans present at the venue.
He celebrated his century by performing a somersault, which showed his majesty and madness.
“Outrageous. He (Pant) plays the numbers game beautifully and plays the way he wants. He will block for a bit and then shift gears," Shastri was quoted as saying on Sky Sports.
“He has his computer and only he knows how it works. That’s his USP. That’s what puts bowlers under pressure and makes him box office, a real entertainer and a match winner," remarked the former India all-rounder about Pant’s ‘method to madness" he added.
Pant had smashed his seventh hundred in the longest format and second overall in overseas conditions and Shastri revealed that it was quite entertaining to watch that innings he also talked about Pant's somersault celebration after scoring his century.
“That’s why there was that celebration. Thanking the man upstairs for giving him the opportunity. I think his recovery from that accident had a lot to do with the frame of his body and being in his mid-20s. When I saw him in the hospital, it wasn’t a pretty sight. Knee in a mess, scars all over the place, bruises all over the place" he added.
A lot of batters would have avoided playing that big shot when they were batting on 99 runs but Pant did things differently as he smashed Shoaib Bashir for a one-handed six as the ball went towards mid-wicket and scored his hundred.
“This fella is box office. One of the great entertainers and one of the best hundred celebrations I have seen. He’s a character, this boy," Ian Ward was quoted as saying on Sky Sports.
Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was heard saying 'Stupid, stupid, stupid' while commentating during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series as he mistimed a scoop shot against Australia. But on the second day of the first Test against England, he was heard as saying, “superb, superb, superb" after Pant smashed a brilliant hundred.
