T20 World Cup: Ex-India spinner R Ashwin has highlighted the crucial battle between India captain Suryakumar Yadav and England leg-spinner Adil Rashid as a key contest to watch in the upcoming IND vs ENG T20 World Cup semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium. India reached the semis after a challenging Super 8s stage.
After their initial loss to South Africa, India rebounded impressively in the must-win matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, enabling them to qualify for the semis.
Meanwhile, the Harry Brook-led England side remained unbeaten during the Super 8s stage in Sri Lanka, dropping only one match—to the West Indies at the same Mumbai venue.

During a YouTube channel interaction, Ashwin emphasized that the contest between Suryakumar Yadav and Adil Rashid could decide the outcome of this semifinal match.
“If we can chase 195 against the West Indies, we can do that against England as well. Their bowling is nothing special as such,” Ashwin was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
“We are playing in India, we are playing at the Wankhede, our favourite ground, so we have the edge. But having the edge does not mean that we will win. No excuse will work; your batting, bowling, and fielding have to be on point. It will not work if they say ‘if only we had done that’. We need a little luck," he added.

This key contest gains significance because Indian batters have frequently struggled against spinners in the ongoing mega event. Opponents have often deployed off-spinners during the powerplay to challenge India's top order, especially given the prevalence of left-handers in their lineup.
SURYAKUMAR VS ADIL RASHID: KEY BATTLE IN MUMBAI
Ashwin emphasized that the contest between Suryakumar and Adil Rashid could significantly influence the semifinal, as English spinners have shown excellent form throughout the tournament.
England's Adil Rashid has been one of the most consistent bowlers so far. Over seven matches, he has taken 11 wickets while conceding 209 runs in 26.4 overs, resulting in an average economy rate of 7.83 runs per over.
Suryakumar has been one of India's star batters. He has scored a total of 231 runs from seven matches, achieving an average of 38.50 runs per innings and maintaining a strike rate of 135.88 (runs scored per 100 balls faced).
When batting against spinners, Suryakumar often employs sweep and slog sweep shots in an attempt to disturb the bowler's length. However, these strategies have not yet yielded consistent success for him.
Suryakumar's familiarity with the Wankhede pitch, gained from his long stint with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, is expected to play a significant role in the semifinal. Having experience with the surface’s pace and bounce may benefit him and the team.
This experience at the Wankhede was evident in India's tournament opener against the USA, where Suryakumar played a crucial knock on a tricky, two-paced pitch. His performance helped India recover from early setbacks and set a competitive target of 161 runs, ultimately leading to a 29-run victory.
It’s also relevant that the Wankhede pitch in this tournament has offered assistance to both fast bowlers and spinners.
Historically, fast bowlers have dominated T20 matches at this venue, taking 1,635 wickets compared to 781 for spinners. However, during the ongoing event, this disparity has narrowed significantly.
Spinners have taken 40 wickets at an average of 26.45 runs per wicket. Fast bowlers have claimed 43 wickets at an average of 27 runs per wicket and have bowled with an economy rate of 9.10 runs per over.
Since everything is at stake in the summit clash, Ashwin emphasized that the Suryakumar vs. Rashid matchup could decide the semifinal.
