IND vs NZ: Washington Sundar Ruled Out Of Remainder Of ODI Series Against New Zealand Due To Injury

India vs New Zealand ODI Series: India's star all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The series kicked off on Sunday as India took a 1-0 lead on the back of a four-wicket victory in the high-scoring, thrilling contest, but the hosts have suffered a huge blow with Sundar sustaining an injury.

India chased down the 301-run target in 49 overs on the back of yet another batting masterclass from Virat Kohli. The senior batter played an incredible knock of 93 runs with the help of eight fours and a six, whereas skipper Shubman Gill (56) and Shreyas Iyer (49) produced impactful efforts. The Men in Blue will be looking to come up with another dominating performance in order to extend their lead and seal the series when they take the field in the second game on Wednesday.

However, India will be without Sundar's services in the remaining two matches. This is a big blow to the Indian team, who are already without Rishabh Pant, who was ruled out of the ongoing series with a side strain. Pant suffered the injury on the eve of the series opener as India added Dhruv Jurel to the squad as his replacement. Meanwhile, Indian captain Shubman Gill provided an update on Sundar's fitness, confirming that the latter suffered a side strain.

"Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," Gill said at the post-match presentation.

Notably, Washington went off the field in the first innings as he looked in discomfort, clutching his back while bowling the 20th over for India. The 26-year-old could bowl only five overs in the innings. Interestingly, he had to come out to bat for India in their run chase, which got a bit tricky towards the end. He came out to bat at no.8 and was in visible discomfort through the run-a-ball seven-run innings. He remained at the other end as KL Rahul finished things off by smashing Kristian Clarke for a couple of boundaries and a six.

Washington has recently emerged as a regular player for India in all three formats as he continues to impress with his ability to create impact in all three departments.
