IND vs NZ T20 World Cup 2026: After a strong tournament, Sanju Samson said he never aimed to be selfless, noting that head coach Gautam Gambhir and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav encouraged the whole team to shift mindsets. They stressed that the team needs to take precedence over personal milestones.
Before the tournament, Samson was struggling and dropped from the XI. When India needed wins to reach the semifinals, the management changed strategies, brought him back, and he responded with three straight fifties.
“That’s the way everyone is thinking now. It was a conscious decision brought in by our captain and coach in the dressing room. The constant message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second," Samson told reporters.

“That automatically got drilled into every one of us in the team, and that’s how we started reacting in every game," he said.
He explained that remaining true to his nature enabled him to make significant contributions to the team.

Since his Under-13 days playing for Kerala, Samson has viewed cricket as a team sport. He emphasized the importance of playing to win, insisting that every action must serve the team's victory first.
