Shubman Gill Injury Update, IND vs SA 1st Test: Shubman Gill is all set to miss the action on the third day of the first Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. His availability for the remainder of the match is in serious doubt due to a neck issue.
Gill, who didn't take any further part in the play on the second day after retiring hurt during India's first innings, was stretchered into an ambulance to a hospital in Kolkata, with his neck in a cervical collar. The Indian captain had walked off after suffering what appeared to be a whiplash while slog-sweeping Simon Harmer for four. The physio attended to him immediately, and the opener retired hurt on four after facing just three balls.
The star batter Gill has been admitted to Woodlands Hospital and will be under observation on Saturday night. South Africa assistant coach Morne Morkel blamed it on a bad night's "sleep and not his workload".

"Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night's sleep. I don't think it's, or we can put it down to the load," Morkel said, when asked if Gill's packed multi-format calendar was a factor.
"Gill is a very fit guy; he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us. Another sort of partnership with him batting around was going to be needed for us at the time, and… just bad timing," he said.

Since becoming India's new Test and ODI captain, Gill has been in action on a consistent basis and hasn't missed a single game of international cricket. He was also made the T20I vice-captain, which meant that while most Test players rested out in the recent three-T20I Australia series, he played and batted in all matches.
"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," BCCI said in a release. In Gill's absence, Rishabh Pant took the leadership role for India on the second day as the hosts produced an incredible bowling effort after getting bowled out for 189 runs in their first innings.
On the back of Ravindra Jadeja's four wickets, India reduced the visitors to 93/7 in their second innings. The Proteas are 63 runs with skipper Temba Bavuma (29) and Corbin Bosch (1) at the crease.
