"Incredible win by the women in blue! Shafali Verma’s fearless batting and Deepti Verma’s all-round class made all the difference. Champions in every sense of the word," Shikhar Dhawan posted.
"Every World Cup we’ve gone into, there have been so many heartbreaks for all of us. But we always believed that we had a bigger responsibility - not just to win, but to keep growing women’s cricket. And honestly, just look at the support we’ve had over the last month and a half. It’s been incredible. To finally lift the World Cup today - I’ll take those 45 sleepless nights any day for this moment," India's star batter Smriti Mandhana said after the win.
Deepti Sharma was the star performer in the final as she smashed a half-century and also took a match-winning five-wicket haul. Shafali Verma, who just made her return to the side after a while, also came up with an all-round effort, taking two wickets and scoring 87 runs.
The Women in Blue kicked off their campaign with the victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. However, they suffered a huge setback with the successive defeats against South Africa, Australia and England. They won the match against New Zealand before the Bangladesh game was washed out.
Having registered a famous win over Australia in the semifinals, they were just a step away from climbing to the top of the world. They outclassed South Africa in their third appearance in the final to get over the line.
