“During the tournament, when it actually happened, it still felt like a dream to me. But once it really sank in, when I got home and people started talking about it, it finally felt real,” Deepti was quoted as saying to Sports Today.

“Earlier, I could walk around freely, go to malls and places without much notice. But now, it’s become difficult; you can’t just step out easily. Even with a mask on, people recognise me, which says a lot about how much women’s cricket has grown after the World Cup. It feels really good, and it’s a proud moment when people know you and appreciate your work," she said.

She performed consistently in the mega event. She was also adjudged the player of the tournament award as she had scored 215 runs, taken 22 wickets, and had become the second-highest wicket-taker of the mega event. Her all-round skills, which included a match-winning knock of 58 runs and a five-for in the summit clash against South Africa, helped the team lift their first title.

“And being the first woman to achieve it honestly, I don’t think too much about milestones. For me, whether I score five runs or fifty, what matters most is if my team wins. That’s what’s truly important to me," she added.

According to her, recognition isn't just about fame, but also about progress. She admitted that their World Cup win has changed the way people see women's cricket.

Hailing from Agra, Deepti revealed that this World Cup game will have a huge effect on the game. She said that this win will see women's cricket grow in India.

“There will definitely be a lot of positive changes after this World Cup. Everyone had been waiting for this trophy; India had won everything else, but not the ICC title. Now that we’ve finally won it, women’s cricket is only going to grow further," she added.

"Matches are being televised more often, and the number of games in our calendar year has increased. Even Test matches are happening now. The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has also played a big role in shaping players’ careers. I truly believe this win will inspire many more girls to take up cricket, it’s become that impactful," she said.

Now that Deepti is basking in the success of this win, she will carry with her something more important: the pride of playing for a team that has changed the face of this sport.

From being an aspiring cricketer hailing from Agra to a part of the World Cup-winning team, Deepti's rise shows that this sport is no longer restricted to just men.
