Indian national cricket team vs Australian men's cricket team match:
Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul achieved a historic feat during the first Test against Australia at Perth in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Jaiswal and Rahul registered the highest opening partnership for India in Tests on Australian soil on Sunday.
The two openers combined to surpass the previous record of 191 set by Sunil Gavaskar and K. Srikkanth in Sydney in 1986.
India were off to a magnificent start in their second innings as Jaiswal and Rahul added 201 runs for the first wicket.
Highest opening partnerships for India in Australia
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul - 201 (Perth, 2024)
Sunil Gavaskar and K. Srikkanth - 191 (Sydney, 1986)
Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan - 165 (Melbourne, 1981)
Akash Chopra and Virender Sehwag - 141 (Melbourne, 2003)
Vinoo Mankad and Chandu Sarwate - 124 (Melbourne, 1948)
This also marked the Indian opening pair's first-ever 200-run partnership Under.
It is also the highest by a visiting team outside England since Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes' iconic 323-run stand in Melbourne in 1912.
Rahul, who was under immense pressure amid disappointing form, came up with a steady and composed batting effort.
He played a crucial knock of 77 runs off 176 balls before falling to Mitchell Starc late in the 63rd over.
Starting from an overnight score of 90* off 193 balls, Jaiswal wasted little time on Day 3 to reach his first Test century on Australian soil.
Notably, India headed into the series opener with a make-shift opening pair as Rahul took over the role in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma.
India's stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah opted to bat first after winning the toss but the visitors had a horrible outing on day 1 as they were bowled out for just 150 runs in their first innings.
However, Bumrah led from the front with the ball and picked up a memorable five-for to help India bowl Australia out for 104 runs to take a 46-run lead.
