Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Amit Mishra has added another feather to his highly illustrious cap in the low-scoring but heated clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday night.
The veteran spinner has become the third-highest wicket-taker in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He surpassed the Sri Lankan legend and former Mumbai Indians (MI) pace bowler Lasith Malinga to clinch the feat.
The leg-spinner achieved the mark during his team's match against RCB in Lucknow on Monday. Amit bowled brilliantly against the Faf Du Plessis' side and took full advantage of the spin-friendly pitch in their home conditions.
He first dismissed Suyash Prabhudessai (6) in the 15th over and then got the better of RCB skipper Du Plessis (44) in his very next over (17th over of the innings), ending up with the figures of 2/21 in the three overs he bowled in the match.
The 40-year-old campaigner has now taken 172 wickets in 160 IPL matches at an impressive average of 23.75 and an economy rate of 7.34. He now only sits behind former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (183 wickets) and Rajasthan Royals' (RR) Yuzvendra Chahal (178 wickets).
The current RR bowling coach Lasith Malinga (170 wickets) and Mumbai Indians'(MI) Piyush Chawla (170 wickets) are placed fourth and fifth respectively in the elite list of IPL records.
Meanwhile, Mishra looked in great touch in the ongoing IPL season having already taken six wickets in as many games he has played so far at an average of 18.16 and an economy rate of 7.26. He has gone wicketless only twice this season and has managed to pick at least a wicket in the rest of the four matches.
KL Rahul-led LSG, however, suffered a stinging defeat in the low-scoring contest against the three-time IPL finalists.
The hosts failed to chase an ordinary-looking target of 127 runs and fell 18 runs short in the end and were bowled out by RCB for just 108 runs in their 19.5 overs.
LSG, earlier, put up a top-notch performance with the ball after being put into bowl first by the visitors. They managed to restrict RCB to 126/9 in their 20 overs, thanks to the complete bowling performance they displayed at their home ground.
After the fourth defeat of their IPL 2023 campaign, LSG stands third in the points table with five wins and 10 points only behind Gujarat Titans (1st place) and Rajasthan Royals (2nd place) having 12 and 10 points respectively.
Lucknow will next face MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in their home venue in Lucknow on Wednesday, May 3.
