The last day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season brought too much drama as it was yet to be decided who will be the last team to join Gujarat Titans (GT), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the playoffs.
Mumbai Indians (MI) needed a sure victory to stay in the race whereas Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had everything in their hands this time as they only needed to win their match against Gujarat Titans to go through irrespective of the result of Mumbai's game.
The day began with Rohit Sharmas's side thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets at the Wankhee Stadium in Mumbai to climb up to the fourth position in the points table as they needed Titans to beat RCB in the second game of the day.
The defending champions made it easy for Mumbai in the end as they registered a thumping victory over Faf du Plessis' side to knock them out of the race to make it to the playoffs.
After the end of the league stage, Gujarat Titans remained at the top of the points table with 20 points in 14 matches as they were the first team to qualify for the playoffs. Chennai Super Kings (17 points) stand second in the table followed by Lucknow Super Giants (17 points) at third and Mumbai Indians (16 points) in fourth place respectively.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) (14 points) were looking like one of the strong contenders for most of the time in the season to finish in the top four but managed to remain at the fifth position with RCB (14 points) finishing at the sixth place.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) (12 points) ended their season in seventh place followed by Punjab Kings (PBKS) (12 points), Delhi Capitals (DC) (10 points) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (8 points) at the bottom of the table respectively.
