India star batter Virat Kohli registered his 100th fifty-plus score in T20 cricket during Royal Challengers Bangalore' (RCB) clash against Punjab Kings in the IPL 2024 on Monday.
Chasing a tricky target of 177 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Kohli smashed a 31-ball fifty to keep RCB's hope intact in the match after losing Fa du Plessis (3), Cameron Green (3) and Rajat Patidar (18) cheaply in the innings.
The right-handed batter, who was given two chances by Punjab due to sloppy fielding, smashed his 92nd T20 half-century, out of which 51 came in IPL. Kohli scored his first T20 of the year and that came in the first home game of the franchise.
In the T20 format, Kohli holds eight centuries and 92 fifties. Former RCB skipper has scored one century and 37 fifties in India jersey. The opening batter played a knock of 77 runs including two sixes and 11 fours before losing his wicket to Harshal Patel.
The 35-year-old batter has become the third batter in the world to amass 100 fifty-plus scores in T20 cricket. He joined West Indies legend Chris Gayle and Australia batter David Warner in the elusive list. Gayle has 110 fifty-plus scores to his name while Warner holds 109 fifty or above scores in T20 format.
Kohli is also the leading run-getter in T20I with over 4037 runs to his name in 117 matches for India. He averages at 51.75 in the format and scores at a strike rate of 138.15. India captain Rohit Sharma is second on the list with 3974 runs in 151 matches.
Before linking up with the franchise in Bangalore, Kohli was out of action for more than two months for the birth of his second child Akaay. He missed the five-match Test series against England.
In his first match upon return, Kohli looked out of flow and only scored 21 runs off 20 balls with a solitary six. RCB lost the match by six wickets to suffer a low-key season start.
