IPL 2025: Chennai Super Kings revealed on Friday that they have roped in South Africa's star all-rounder Dewald Brewis to their side after fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh had to pull out of IPL 2025 owing to an injury. Brewis did enter his name at the mega auction last year at the best price of Rs 75 lakhs, but the Chennai-based franchise bought him for a whopping amount of Rs 2.2 crore.
Technically, an Indian player can be replaced by an Indian only, but they did have one overseas slot left to post the mega auction last year and thus brought Brevis.
The young South African all-rounder, also known as 'Baby AB', due to his similar looks and his playing style to that of legendary Ab De Villiers, is considered one of the upcoming talents in this sport.
He has represented South Africa in two T20Is, where he has scored just five runs, but his abilities have helped him become one of the top players.
He last played in a competitive cricket match representing Titans in the CSA 4-Day series division 1 tournament and became the second-highest run-getter as he had scored 573 runs after playing in 12 matches at a staggering average of 47.75.
He will be entering the cash-rich league tournament on the back of some consistent performances for his domestic team Titans and was thus able to score consistently both in List A and first-class games.
He had represented MI in 10 matches and still plays for this franchise in the MLC and SA20.
He had scored 251 runs in the MLC after playing in nine matches at a staggering average of 31.25 and a brilliant strike rate of 133.
He has featured in 81 T20s till now and batted at a strike rate of 144.93. He was in sublime form during the SA20 2025, where he was the sixth-highest run-getter as he scored 291 runs after playing in 10 matches at a brilliant average of 48.5 and a strike rate of 148.17.
Brevis would be joining the MS Dhoni-led side, which is lying in the last position in the points table after winning just two matches till now.
He has become the second player to be replaced for CSK during the ongoing season, who had also roped in Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
