IPL 2025: All the 10 IPL teams work under strict rules, but the BCCI did make some provisions, which will help a franchise include a replacement in special circumstances. Although the common rule is that the player should stay with a team throughout a season there are some exceptions like when a player gets injured or withdraws.
As per Cricbuzz, one of the most important provisions is to allow a team to include a short-term replacement wicketkeeper if all the other registered wicket-keepers are not available.
For this, a team needs approval from the BCCI and can only be applied till the registered wicketkeeper is fully recovered. And if that franchise did use its full quota of including all their overseas players, then that replacement should be an Indian.
As far as the other replacements are concerned, the teams can only buy players from the registered available player pool, which includes the list of players, who did register for the mega auction but went unsold. They could be selected as replacements for those players who aren't available for the rest of the season owing to injuries, national duties, or other reasons.
In order to become a replacement, a player must first pull out from the team's 12th group stage match owing to an injury or illness. A medical analysis from the players' home country and the BCCI doctor is needed to ensure his unavailability.
Additional measures
At the same time, if a player pulls out owing to national duty or doesn't have a NOC from their national board, then too can also be replaced for the rest of the season.
A replaced player's salary would not be more than that of the player who withdrew and the match fees won't be included in his salary for the season. But if the replacement does continue to play for the rest of the season, then the salary would be included. At the same, all the franchises must ask the BCCI for its approval before naming any player as the replacement.
It should be noted here that despite having these rules for the last 17 years, not a single team has used the short-term wicketkeeper replacement rule. And this rule is only made to be used in emergencies.
