IPL 2025: India's star wicketkeeper-batter Kannaur Lokesh Rahul or KL Rahul has been a pillar of the Indian middle order as a 'crisis man', who saves the team from the jaw of defeats against all odds.
Rahul is best known for having technical superiority as a batter and he has abilities to shift gears in strange situations. Rahul is also known for his an efficient wicketkeeper while playing a crucial role behind the stump for his team.
Many fans believe that Rahul was named after a famous cricketer however that's not the case. Interestingly Kannur Lokesh Rahul -KL Rahul- was not named after a famous cricketer.
Rahul was born on April 18, 1992, in Bangalore, Karnataka and began his cricket training at the age of 10.
In India, some players are revered like demigods, and others are greatly admired or respected by the people, gaining a lot of attention from new parents who want to name their newborns after famous personalities.
The most remarkable thing is that Rahul's father was an avid cricket fan however he mistook the star Indian cricketer's name which led to KL Rahul’s name, which became prominent independently through his cricket achievements.
Which Famous Cricketer Was KL Rahul Named After?
KL Rahul's father Loknath Rahul, was a fan of former Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar and wanted to name his son Rohan after legendary cricketer's son.
The whole story started when Rahul's father got the birth certificate made however he mistook Gavaskar's son's name as Rahul. In a case of misunderstanding, he misinterpreted Rohan's name as Rahul and ended up naming his son KL Rahul.

Interestingly, the wicketkeeper-batter's mother wanted her son to be named Rahul after Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who used this name in his earlier movies.
Meanwhile taking about KL Rahul's current form, the wicketkeeper-batter has demonstrated himself as one of India’s exclusive batter across all formats of the game. Since making his debut he has since grown to become an agile right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman playing for India internationally since 2014.
