IPL 2026: R Ashwin has reignited the debate over MS Dhoni's role for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026, expressing clear disapproval of Dhoni being used solely as an Impact player.
This discussion has intensified in recent weeks as the IPL season approaches. Questions continue about Dhoni's batting workload and whether his role should be reduced. Ashwin dismissed the suggestion that he play solely as an impact substitute.
"I do not agree that he has to stay on the impact list. If he is in the squad, he has to play. If he does not want to, he should not play the entire season; that is it. I am not in agreement with him being an impact player," Ashwin was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin underlined that Dhoni's presence should end speculation regarding his role and emphasized Dhoni's belief in his own ability.
"If you are making a CSK XI and Dhoni is in the squad, the debate ends there—he has to be in the XI. If he does not want to play, he will retire. He believes he can play, practising for three months, and is sending the message that he wants to play," he added.
Ashwin acknowledged that while Dhoni may not be among the top six batters, his value as a wicket-keeper and mentor to Ruturaj Gaikwad justifies his place in the main XI.
"He is not your number six batter, that I will agree. But he can play a double role. He can be the on-field compass for Ruturaj," he added.
Ashwin underscored Dhoni’s vital role in managing the bowlers and controlling the game from behind the stumps, citing his experience as invaluable to the team.
"I think Dhoni will have a critical role in supporting this new bowling line-up on the field. Last year, he wanted to play the last three overs, but the top order did not always score, and he had to come in earlier. This time, they have added power in the top order to avoid that situation," he added.
He said that a formidable top-order will help Dhoni consistently play the finisher's role.
"Maybe this time, out of 14 matches, he will bat higher only in three or four. Otherwise, he will finish matches and focus on keeping, setting the field, and supporting Ruturaj as a team leader," he added.
Ashwin also pointed out that Dhoni’s intensive preparations indicate his intention to contribute fully to the team this season.
"We are seeing his videos. He has been practising for the last three months. That is the message he is giving. He believes he can contribute; he is not the kind of person who will continue," he concluded.
Another ex-Indian cricketer, Aakash Chopra, also criticized the idea of using Dhoni as an impact player, emphasizing he should play fully or not at all.
