IPL 2026: The Indian Premier League will enter its 19th season, and speculation centers on MS Dhoni's role at Chennai Super Kings. Ex-India cricketer Irfan Pathan argues that Dhoni should focus on transitioning leadership to the team's next generation.
During an interaction on Jiostar's Tata IPL Schedule announcement, Pathan praised Dhoni's fitness and commitment but stressed that clarity around Dhoni's role is essential as CSK considers its future leadership.
"We have seen Dhoni take responsibility for years. Now is the moment for him to pass the baton to players like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. The focus should be on preparing the next generation while leveraging Dhoni's experience to guide them," Irfan Pathan said on Jiostar.

A NEW-LOOK CSK IS READY TO ROAR
Building on this envisioned shift, the Chennai-based franchise made bold decisions ahead of the new season. Their squad now features a mix of young and senior players, highlighted by a much-discussed trade in which they acquired Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals in an all-cash deal.
Sanju Samson is expected to be CSK's next wicket-keeper, underscoring the closer transition Pathan advocates. Overseas additions like New Zealand's Matt Henry and West Indies' Akeal Hosein further signal CSK's push toward a new team identity.
Further underlining their rebuilding efforts, CSK signed young wicket-keeper-batter Kartik Sharma and spin all-rounder Prashant Veer for Rs 14.2 crore, signaling the franchise's intent to build a future-ready squad.

PATHAN BACKS CSK'S FEARLESS NEW IDENTITY
Pathan anticipates that this new-look CSK, shaped by transition, will offer fresh aggression and intent.
"In terms of six-hitting ability and intent, I am really looking forward to seeing the fearlessness from this young CSK side," he concluded.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK will open the season against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on 30th March. All eyes are on how the team's young leaders, mentored by Dhoni, step up to define CSK's next chapter.
